What would you do? Job / HR?

Good luck Jason, let us know how things turn out

Jason,

I tend to be a bit jaded when it comes to big corporations, working for them for the past 20 plus years. Don't confuse the coffee title of the meeting with what it is - it is a business meeting with you having a chance to give input and hopefully be heard. What you say and how you say it may be remembered by the suits in attendance. This is coming from one of the few suits that truly wants to hear the reality of what is going on in the business from the front line employees (closest to customer), but unfortunately I am a minority in big corporations. It sounds like your company may have a good culture and they truly want to improve things, not just for the "show", but rather for the good of the corporation and it's bottom line.

Be prepared, be confident and be yourself.

Good luck!

Well..... I feel pretty stupid. I usually arrive to work around 6 because most people in my office don't show up till 8 or 9 and it's quiet. I show up this morning and my boss stops me as I enter the door. "Hey I see you're off tomorrow do you have a second?" We go into his office and he hands me an envelope. I was offered another position in the company with a much better than average pay increase and a bonus. I asked what the other stuff was and he said "oh well everyone got something for last year's performance. You didn't think that was your raise for your degree?" Well guess I thought to quickly about the whole thing so I am pretty happy. I told him that I had set up a coffee talk about my degree. He laughed and said well use it to get to know people. Hopefully you're happy now. Yeah so I guess freak out for nothing and I'm satisfied for now.... again thanks everyone for all the encouragement and advice.

Congrats Jason - things worked out :) I'm happy for you. You company does seem like one that does support its staff. Not all companies are like that.

Good for you, I suspect this is no coincidence.

Congrats Jason, pleased it worked out so well for you! Sounds like a descent company you work for, so many aren't:)

It could have been the Coffe Talk meeting that inspired all of this. Trust me, big corporations (and small local businesses) at times will take advantage of thier employees to make an extra buck. Happens all the time. By you calling the meeting may have played their hand but all in all it's nice to see they stepped up to the plate and recognized a valuable employee.

Congratulations Jason!! Best of luck in the new role and I know you will exceed all of their expectations.

Good thing you didn't get too emotional about it. It would have been pretty embarrassing sitting with them with nothing but complaints while they were waiting to hand you your raise and bonus. Congrats and have a great long weekend!

Congratulations Jason, suggest you escape to the boat again this weekend for another drink.....................except make it Champagne this time!

Jason,

Awesome for you. I am just now reading through this thread. Have to say, what a great wealth of advice from the group of contributors. Like many of the others, I have been fortunate enough to be involved in a variety of organizations as a strategy and management consultant before moving into the exec suite. What I can add is that as a rule, the cream always rises to the top. This happens as a result of Emotional Intelligence above and beyond the discipline intelligence one has, and the ability to leverage the emotional intelligence to effectively interact and navigate the interpersonal/relational aspect of organizations (a great book on emotional intelligence: http://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Intelligence-Matter-More-Than/dp/055338371X).

It seems your organization has recognized the value you bring - enjoy celebrating that. Those are truly gratifying and memorable moments in your career.

All the best man - and hey, did I miss a wedding? Or is that on the horizon?

This is a great thread. Waiting it out seemed to be the over laying idea and it worked here.

One of the things that can happen to companies that continually hire to management positions from lower classifications from within is that they do not keep up with outside pay scales. A typical percentage increase stays in place for years with no real look at the market.

I made a change and asked for market rate for the position I was going into. The company did some research and found that they were below pay grade and increased my rate by the now industry standard for my position. Not only did they increase my rate but increased everyone's rate in that department.

It was a win/win for them and my department. After the increase the competency of new hires went up as more qualified applicants were now applying for positions.

Thanks all. No none of you have missed a wedding. We have both been very busy (especially me) and we haven't set a date. We've been together for 7 years so we have no need to get this done right away.

As for work... It's a large company and it takes a painfully long time to get anything passed through anywhere. I don't believe that it was a "Ooops... he's peeved" perk because it was to fast to do so. I truly believe that they had it in the works for at least a month just because how the process work.

Again, I can't thank you all enough for the great insight and information!

Congrats Jas!
I'm glad that they stepped up for you!
