Hello new member - have 1987 sea ray 268DA - it's in good shape, except the green around the boat. looks like the clear coat is going ??. any easy way to fix.
Photo shows problem on left - I sanded it off on the right in a small test area. 400-600-1000-2000 sand paper. no other cleaners would work. would not even come off with 600 paper had to go to 400 with alot of elbow grease. - any idea of another way to fix -thanks

I don't think there was any clear coat applied at the plant by Sea Ray but I might be wrong. I have that same color on the radar arch of my 39. It was wet sanded with 1000 grit then buffed with 3M Deep Cut and it came right back. Your pic almost looks like someone put some of that poly coat mess on there.

Pick a small inconspicuous place and try some acetone. that might get it done for you then you could try buffing it out with a rotary.

What sprink said. I thik its time to strip the acrylic coating (poly glow or vertglass etc...) Try some concentrated ammonia or better yet a commercial floor wax stripper. Acetone works too but its flamable and the fumes are nasty.

It doesn't look like Poliglow but if it is just use commercial floor wax stripper from Home Depot. Use a diluted solution and a soft scrub brush - spray, let it soak for a few minutes and then scrub lightly and it will come right off.

Looks like old Poly glow or Vertglass as stated above, Poly glow has a stripper that will remove there product, not sure about Vertglass stuff. I would agree to try a good floor strpper ass well. Be carefull wet sanding, you can't put back gell coat when you take off to much.

Thanks everyone for the input - I did it the hard way - I wet sanded it off 400-600-1000-1500-2000 sand paper & did the whole green stripe. Lots work but it looks new.
Now redoing the dash - moving everything - adding 2 garmin 3210.

I'm not sure why so many people insist on wet sanding old Poly Glow and Vertglass when there are easy spray and scrub solutions available. Just last week, while I was applying Vertglass to my hull, a guy came over and told me I was nuts for doing it. Seems his dad or someone had used it and when it needed stripping, they wet sanded the ENTIRE BOAT! WHY?! The stuff is acrylic plastic it will gum up sand paper in no time, kind of like trying to sand latex paint. When its time to remove any acrylic polymer coating, either use their stripper or a commercial floor wax stripper. Much easier and faster and you don't risk removing any gelcoat.
JMHO.

I don't think my problem was Poly Glow or Vertglass - it sanded very easy, just took a little time - did not gum up sand paper at all -

Best kept secret!!!! Are you ready???????? Mayonnaise! Glop it on your gel coat...let it sit....a few hours..i left ours on overnight (a cool night with no rain) came back the next day and washed it as ususal. Used 3m clean and wax. Looks like showroom new..
