At a minimum I would have a pliers, sharp knife, screwdrivers (both types) and maybe a socket set. I also carry a couple lengths of spare hose and common clamps for the AC, engine etc. Duct and electrical tape. Carry spare prop hub and prop if single engine. I also carry a folded piece of plastic-- it saved a fellow boater once when he hit a floating log and it holed his boat. I jumped overboard with the duct tape and piece of plastic and taped it over the hole. Worked well to get back to land. Rags are a must too and stuffed in a hole will staunch a leak.

I actually carry one of those tool kits that come in a plastic open flat holder. It has all I mentioned and complete socket set. Plus all the stuff is held in the plastic case so doesn't 'clatter' around at all.

I carry one of those tool kits that come in a plastic open flat holder too. I think I paid 60 or 70 bucks for it a few years ago at Home Depot. It has most of what you need in an emergency. I carry a second plasti box with odds and ends in it. Mostly electrical stuff like tape, connectors, fuses, crimping/striping pliers, etc.. I keep a spare float switch aboard because they seem to go more often than the pumps. I have an extra set of belts. They weigh almost nothing, take up little room, and have come in handy for me and others in the past.

I agree with everything posted so far.

I keep a toolkit onboard in a water proof Pelican case. It has the normal items such as screw drivers, a leatherman, hose clamps, a spare impeller, tape. One biggie, carry spare light bulbs for your nav lights. You never know when one may go out and you end up needing it. They are a few bucks more, but you can buy an led for virtually every light fixture on a boat.

Rescue tape will fix almost any split hose on the boat.
Works for engine and fresh water systems.

I recommend any tool used on the boat should stay on board for the next time.
In a season or two, you will have every tool you could possibly need.
Oh yea, one tool will get you out of most jams....a check book.
:)
