I was just contacted from my local marinemax dealer here in Lindenhurst, Long Island that they took a 2005 sea ray 320 sundancer on trade. I am looking at trading in my 05 280 for it. The boat is equipped with generator, radar, white hull, basically all the major options. It has 6.2l bravo 3's which is rare for this kind of boat in my area being it's salt water. They are asking $149,900 which seems ridiculous to me in this market. For the added fuel economy and speed i would almost prefer the stern drives to the vdrives. What is your opinion on the drives and what should i offer?

our local sea ray dealer has a 2004 320 with 6.2's and V-drives, they are asking $149,000. We bought our 2005 320 w/V-drives the beginning of the year for $134,000. Doesn't have the radar, but has most all the other bells and whistles. Fresh water boat.

As for stern drives vs. V-drives I can say I am absolutely sold on V-drives. Handling, backing etc is such a breeze. I love our boat!!!! And we have the blue hull.

Do a search on boattraderonline.com and see what similar boats are going for in your area..Stern drives in some salt water areas are a hard sell and are discounted compared to V-Drives. If that's the case make a low offer, or wait for the right boat. I would think in the low to mid 130's would be about right.

dcwjd,

Since you're in Long Island you know that you'll be cruising in salt water most of the time. This means only two things, BIIIs will be in danger of corrosion, which means servicing every year is a must. Every area is different, but in our area you're looking at around $400 each. How much do you need to cruise to save $800? The other thing what Barry had mentioned, you may have hard time selling it, b/c other boater wont like the fact that those BIIIs are older and will have even greater risk of failure. I've been lucky with BIII on my 240DA, but it wasn't in salt all the time. If you search the board there were number of discussions on this and you'll see what kind of issues people went through. I did the same research before investing in 320DA and v-drives was the only way to go in our area. I think maintenance free gear is much better savings than potential saving in fuel.

Good luck,
Alex.

As far as value is concerned, visit nadaguides.com. That will give you a good idea what retail value should be. obviously in this market, you will have to adjust that depending on your locale. IMHO, there is no comparison between the BIII and the v-drives. I just rchased a 06 320 and test drove both. Everything is better with the v-drives from planing, to steering, to acuracy of the course you set. Unless the BIII you are looking at has bow thrusters, go with the vdrives. Even with the bow thrusters, the BIII is still difficult to maneuver in slow speeds. I concur with the gentleman that posted earlier concerning the maintenance of the BIII, especially in salt water. Another added benefit of the v-drives is that the prop shafts are completely sealed compared to models 4 to 5 years ago. They are virtually maintenance free. HTH.

Hi Walt,
You post a real easy question. Do the numbers and Offer them what you can afford.
If they don't go for it, move on to a 34 DA. Save some $$$$$$$ for gas and beer.
Good luck

boat is already sold. Went to look at it saturday morning and someone looked at it and put a deposit on it immediately. Guess it went for the 150k they were asking. It sold within a few days of taking it on a trade.

I'd be surprised if it went for the asking price in this market, but they might have taken the first offer given. But I've seen it happen where the people don't qualify for the financing etc, so you never know until it closes. $149,900 is too much in this market anyway...

Good luck...
Barry

You could go bigger and older much cheaper. The market is in the tank between 30 and 50 footers right now. MM is off 28% from last year and they were off over 20% last year. Do the math. With the weak dollar, the only place sales are doing anything is overseas. The price of fuel is quickly killing that market as well.

Here on Long Island they haven't adjusted there prices at all. They have a bunch of 2007 320's leftover and haven't taken anything off over what people payed for them last year. Even on preowned they will not take much off of what the asking price is. I can't believe this particular boat sold. It was absolutely filthy and not in the water to bay test.It looked neglected to me.

What are the prices on the 320's in Long Island- for new 320's?

I'm in the market for a similar cruiser... my first, as my username shows. I have been scanning the used market religiously, hoping the current poor market plus gas prices would be a great buying opportunity. I have frankly been stunned by the way prices have stayed up, even as inventory grows. It seems dealers and individuals would rather sit on an unsold boat than admit market value has declined. I guess I'll keep looking...

I think you'll find that many people that are selling, are underwater on their loan to valuations... The amortization pays off so little principal in the beginning but the depreciation drops like a rock. Unless they can get a certain amount, they can't afford to sell. That will keep the resale prices high until repossession.

new 2007 320's on long island are going for 180k+ depending on options. Brokerage is certainly the way to go rather then from a dealer to save $$. Usually at the end of a season when the person is desperate to get rid of it so they don't have to winterize and get another slip next year to try and sell it again.

Repo's on used boats are up over 50% in '08 v. '06. It could be they are up due to the subprime housing debacle trickle effect. The banks don't want the boats. MM is on the verge of toesupedness in the US. Do your homework. Take your time. What is important is that you find what you want at the price you want it. It's out there. Mine's for sale. Hell, I'll even through in a full tank of gas.
