Getting ready to polish and wax the boat on Sunday and had a couple questions about my PC 7424.
1. What speed do you guys use for buffing polishing? I will be using a Mequire's 8006 pad for the polishing and 9006 for waxing.

2. Same speed for waxing and polishing?

3. Can I use these pads on my vehicles after washing the pads?

Thanks guys, I am really looking forward to seeing some nice results thanks to your help.

Weave- the manufacturer of the material you are using will usually indicate in the instructions the proper RPM and technique for their product.

In general, you want a compound or polish to stay wet while you are 'working' the material in a 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 area. You do that by using a low RPM with a moderate pressure. As you complete 'working' the material you can lighten the pressure and raise the RPM and the material will begin to dry and reveal the surface. 3M Finesse It II works very well with this type of application and it becomes apparent as you experiment with it that it was designed to work like that.

Wax typically wants a warm, consistent application achieved by running the buffer at a medium RPM with medium pressure (slightly more than the weight of the machine).

Using a grease pencil to mark your way as you polish can help a great deal. You can also use it to highlight areas that need special attention.

 So slower RPM's will allow you to keep the polish wet and work it in. I actually have a dealer around here that swears by Collonite so I have decided to give them a whirl...If I am not satified I will check out the Mequire's line.

Go to properboatcare.com. They have detailed write ups on the right way to use your orbital including recommended speeds.

Weave-I'm a Collinite believer. I use their #885 Paste wax on all gel coat, interior cabinets, counter tops, tables, bathrooms, etc. Their #920 cleaner is a little more aggressive than the 3M Finesse It II, so I often use the 3M product instead. I also apply and remove the #885 by hand.

I've polished/compounded at 1800-2000 rpm's.
Wax is about 100-120spm (strokes per minute, hand application!) :D
Experiment and never use a faster speed than is necessary as you can burn stuff or snag something in a hurry!

1. Good pad choices! I use speed 5 for polishing and 5 for first coat of wax. 2nd and 3rd coat of wax I do at 3 and really work the product.

2. I don't think it would hurt to use the same speed.... #5 on my 1st wax pass gets a good thin coat of product on their..... 2nd and 3rd coat I go at 3 so I can really work the wax in.

3. I would say no on this one as you should use a separate pad for each product period. Meguiars does not recommend washing the pads. The same pads, 8006 for polishing and 9006 for waxing, will work very well on your vehicles but I would invest in a new pad for each. Once done I store the pads in a ziploc bag (one pad per) with the end open (not wide open just not sealed) to allow pad to dry. The ziploc keeps the dust off the pad.

Auto Detailing Solutions has very nice 6 pack of pad deals.... making them just over $8....
