I am thinking about adding radar to my boat since I head to Santa Cruz Island off Santa Barabara, Calif. a number of times a year. It is around 18 nm to the island and crosses a major shipping lane going to LA and Long Beach. There have been times when the fog dropped in and I end up losing time while I wait it out. What would you folks recommend. Thanks for the help.

Reflection came with a high-end Simrad system that is really impressive but is simply overkill.

We use mostly Furuno in our commercial applications and they are solid units. The one recommended by BOE would be a great choice for the application you're looking for. I know how that crossing can be, and if fog sets in, it's paid for itself just for the piece of mind and safety on that one crossing. The larger vessels likely cannot see you on their radar so I applaud you for thinking ahead :smt038

I ditto the Furuno recommendation. Great display. Great interface. Professioanl grade reliability. Just see what commercial vessels and the USCG are using.

You do see many commercial boats with Furuno--great units. The USCG on Lake Michigan for years has used Raytheon. I understand the government awarded Furuno the contract for new purchases. You still see lots of Raytheon and Raymarine products on Lake Michigan. I think I would probably go with Furuno the next time around. My experience with their instruction books has been frustrating in the past. They used to be written by Japanese people who were "fluent" in English. Some paragraphs made no sense at all.
