What other brands of boats did you own and.................

I have only owned one other, a 62 Glasspar. I still have it. I did not appreciate how well made it was until I started looking around at other boats in my search for something larger.

What I think about it is:

For its size, it is more seaworthy than my 270.

It has a real dual trumpet air horn that can be heard.

The Merc 1000 outboard on it is more reliable than the engine I/O in my sundancer. It has never quit me on the water, which I can't say about the 270. It has two fuel pumps, three carbs, two distributors. Lots of redundancy. I was out on the river one evening with four people on board. I lost some power and could not get on plane. We just putted back the the dock, enjoying the sunset. No one but me ever knew anything was wrong. I later found that a wire under the dash to the tach had shorted to ground, and shorted out one of the set of points, and I was running on one distributor instead of two, and three cylinders instead of six.

But, it has no head, fridge, fresh water system. Nobody says "Nice boat" when I launch it. But it is a nice boat.

We had a Bayliner 3055 SB, never had any problems with it. It was real fast wot 49mph+(T7.4 mercs). It was a very competent boat as long as it was used for what it was designed for. We traded it because we wanted more room, gen and ac. The dealer had it on the lot for less than 30 days, sitting with simular sized Sea Rays.
Of course it used cheaper materials and the hull was pretty thin compared to the Sea Rays. But it cost half as much.

I also own a 1997 Alpina ski boat which under the skin is actually a custom Ski Brendella. It is a mid engine straight drive boat and has a 350 MAG Ski Tournament motor, Velvet Drive transmission, Perfect Pass, 13th Floor tower, heater, hot water shower, stereo, ballast, and a lot of other cool stuff. It drives like a super hot sports car, practically jumps out of the water when you bury the throttle, feels like it has the torque to pull a cruise ship and can turn at speed in what seems like its own length. It is the most thrilling boat I have ever had.

In order:

1972 13' Boston Whaler - perfect first boat. 28 HP Evinrude that never missed a beat. Just enough varnish to give me something to putter with.

1975 Grady White - Awkward yellow gelcoat (think Grey Poupon mustard) w/ a 115 Evinrude. Got it from the original owner who used it solely for fishing and THRASHED it. I gutted out the interior, installed new Nautilex vinyl, seats, dash, fuel tank, etc. A good, solid seaworthy boat, even if it was butt-ugly.

1975 Penn Yan runabout - probably my favorite boat ever. Also purchased from the original owner who was an airline mechanic. Had only ever been in fresh water, had only had Mobil One synthetic oil in the crankcase, and was generally babied all its life. The smog-era 302 Ford/OMC was only rated at 185 HP, but he'd upgraded to a Holley 4 BBL and transom pipes. Loved that sound! In a relatively light boat it was good for high 40's. He had also built a custom mahogany swim platform, and low rails around the cockpit. I had to refresh the varnish every couple of years, but it was worth it. A really sharp, head turner of a boat. I sometimes wish I hadn't sold it to buy.....

My current ride is a 2000 260DA. You've all heard my tales of woe there, so I won't bore you again. She's due to be hauled today, in fact. Outdrive's stuck in reverse..............sigh.............

Cheers,

Bill

1989 Bayliner 1700 with a two stroke 85 HP Force engine mounted inboard sideways, with a “V†or more technically an “L†drive. Yes I know very weird, so we ended up referring to this vessel as the Bilgeliner with the Farce engine. Had a very frustrating cold start problem due to a poorly designed choke system that was supposed to prevent flooding of the engine. On several damp cold mornings when taking friends fishing, it was necessary to resort to spraying either staring fluid or carburetor cleaner directly into the air intake. My standard line to the guests was it will either start or blow us up.
Surprisingly, when it ran, it would pull a 200 lb skier on a good day.

I like my current boat much better.

88 Wellcraft 210 Classic. This was my first "real" boat that I purchased when I was 21. And, dare I say.....even had to finance it. I loved everything about the boat until everything started breaking on it. Also had a Sears Gamefisher Jon boat when I was growing up.

First boat: 8 foot aluminum john boat at age 12; powered by 1 boy with two oars. Great little pond boat for a kid. It was literally unsinkable.

Second boat: 1978 O'Day 22, shoal draft keel. 9.9 Evinrude kicker. Decent, safe daysailer. Easy to sail, hard to sail well. The shoal draft made trailering simple. Needed a good breeze to move, but too much wind pushed the boat around because of the shoal draft. Cockpit was a bit small; had 2 bunks plus a v-berth - not really useful for anything but a quick nap or storage. Headroom was too low to sit on the potty. Sold it to get a powerboat to better fit what I wanted to do.

Third boat: 1990 Larson Hampton 22. 5.0 liter Mercruiser / Alpha 1 engine. Nice boat. Perfect first powerboat. Nice cuddy cabin, porta head, good speed, good for lounging and some basic fishing. Had a really nice, comfortable ride. Construction was pretty good, although the plywood seat bases started to rot and had to be replaced. and the mold plastic dash panel cracked. Biggest complaint was Larson's anchor locker access through a 6" pry-out deck plate: dumb! Bought used; traded it for a bigger boat for a growing family.

Current boat: 2006 Sea Ray Amberjack. 350 MAG / Bravo 3. Very pleased with performance, construction. A few annoyances, but a good, well built boat. Big upgrade from the Larson.

Before we made the switch to Sea Ray, we were Crownline owners;

1st boat was a 96' 210CCR. We didn't expect we get something with a cabin and toilet for our first boat, we were shopping for a used bow rider and came across this one and really enjoyed it. Too small for our lake so we upgraded to;

2nd boat was a 00' 266LTD Crownline, we fell in love with this boat the first time we saw it. Nice lines, good quality and still had the comfort of a cabin with a head. Performance was great and it ate up the choppy lake. We had the boat for 4 summers and decided it was time to take the leap. We sold the boat and upgraded to our current 280DA. I do miss the boat, especially knowing it was shipped to Europe but the 280 is by far the best boat we have owned thus far.

First was 1967 30' Chris: party boat, terrible in a sea
Second, 1977 23' Formula w/twin 170 Volvos: fast and great in a sea
Third, 1979 26 SR Express: Comfortable for 2, very good in a sea.
Fourth, 1986 30' SR Express: Maybe my best SR. Well built, but too small for us.
Fifth: 1989 13' Boston Whaler, kids boat but we loved it too. Great on Lake Michigan when you had an onshore breeze.
6th: 1993 37' SR Express. A party boat, great styling, had lots of leaks, not good in a sea.
We also owned several small sailboats and of course a Zodiac.

Blasmphemy!!! All of You!.
Of course I'm kidding, but I have only owned SeaRay's
1991 180BR -
Great first boat and with the 4.3 May have been overpowered, but was a blast.
1995 220OV - Bought when I was previously married. Never slept overnight on it until after I was divorced and dating my now wife. Set up identically, except no FWC, EFI or heat to the 230OV I just sold. Great boat.

You mean the bottom one? That's in the Mighty Columbia River. The only reason it looks dirty is because I'm in 0" of water on dirt.
We need to have a beer together. Skol! Big guy

I'm almost embarassed to do this but here goes:

8' homade plywood hydroplane w/10 hp Merc.
14' Aluminum john boat w/10hp Evinrude.......still have it!
14' Lone Star ski boat w/25 hp Johnson...loaned it to a friend who ran it out in a corn field while watching a girl on skis. He maintained she was worth it...last boat I ever loaned...and she wasn't even close to worth it!
14' Herter ski boat w/ 25 hp Evinrude
15' Glaspar w/40 hp Johnson-skiied a million miles behind that one
16' Glastron w/125hp Merc. Boat was rated for a 90 hp motor and I was the terror of the lake.
16' Glastron w/ 225 hp Ford 302 and a Jacuzzi jet pump short boat; very loud.
21 ' Cobalt w/260hp Merc i/o - a very high quality boat
21' Cobalt w/ 330hp Olds engine and a Jacuzzi pump-gas hog and slow
14' Crosby Sled w/33hp Johnson......hog trough was more like it
17 Bomber ski boat w/165hp MErc i/o
19' Viking deck boat w/140hp Merc o/b
24' Wellcraft Nova-oem w/T188hp Merc i/o's; ended up w/twin 428 Ford Police motors and me with a back yard full of broken outdrive gear casings and parts.
33' Cigatette....drug boat bought @ auction....twin 425hp 7.4's...the last 2 boats proved to be a most excellent way to throw $ away!
44' Ocean Super Sport w/6V71's...slow boat to barely breaking even even.
42' Hattaras/6V92's....built like a tank and about as quick as one too.
39' Sea Ray Express Cruiser........an absolutley great boat; I'd still have her if she had had diesel engines.
450DA...Probably one of the top 2-3 boats Sea Ray ever produced.

and, there's not a canbote among 'em.

on my 4th Sea Ray. Started with a 185, then a 290, then a 380, and now a 450. i'll probably make the break with the next boat.

Only other boat was a 26-foot Bayliner. It was a great boat for what it was... It allowed me to get into boating (inexpensively), learn many lessons, and still make the trip from Tacoma to the San Juan Islans many years running.
It was not a great boat in seas, but it was great when the water was flat.

In the end, it taught me what I wanted to have in a boat, and I am very happy with my Sea Ray.
