I am conflicted, I have a 2005 185 sport with the 4.3. Being 5 years old there are alot of maintenance type items people are suggesting to me. The problem is my boat only has 31 hours on it. I change the oil every other season and winterize it myself. I only boat in fresh water so salt is not a problem. The boat still runs good with no problems. Should I change the gear lube this fall? What about the impeller in the outdrive? People have suggested pulling the outdrive to inspect bearings, seals and bellows. What is your opinion of my situation? Thanks

I would call your local Searay dealer, tell them the age of the boat and that you would like an itemized quote for them to do a 5 year maintenance plan on your boat.

They will be more than happy to put one together and email it to you. Then you'll know everything that's required. Maybe it will even be reasonable enough to have them do the work.

Pilot has given you a great plan. I say do the same with not only a Searay dealer, but also with three other marine service places. Compare the list, and the cost of parts and labor. Then make a choice on who and what you want done. As for pulling the drive, pressure testing it, changing the lube and impellers.... I do it every year that way. It is the only way to truly service the drive properly. And as for the engine.... I suggest all new fluids, filters, T-stat, and compression test. Plugs wires, cap and rotor. Along with checking alignment, motor mounts. Etc. Just my thoughts. But I bet the boat runs even better and you will gain power back you never knew you lost.

31 hours.....? Man u need to go use that thing. We put that many on just last week

Yea only 31 hours, the year after we bought it, we had our first baby and two years later we had a second so boating has been limited. Then when we do boat we float in the shallows and sun or play football.

So you really thinkI should follow a standard 5 year maintance plan with only 31 hours, everything still looks new. From the plug wires to the gear lube. I guess it wont hurt to get prices.

Yes every thing may look new, but with age things start to deteriorate whether they are used or not. IMHO - Pilot and Firerooster gave some great advise.

Well congrats on having the family. I will eat my words on the 31 hours thing...:). At least you did a great thing by keeping it thru the early years of babies. Cuz now you still have it and the kids and whole family enjoy it, rather then getting one "some day"

I do realize that everything may appear new.... But just like any car or motorized vehicle, sitting idle is really hard on things, rubber, electrical etc. Start fresh now and you will avoid a lot of bad headaches and fights with momma, upset kids etc. Cuz boat isn't running right. Go for the worry free fun
