What kind of oil

Assuming you're saying that you just purchased the boat and don't know the viscosity of the oil that's in the motor, you should just change the oil (which you should do anyway since you just purchased it) then you'll know what ya got.

If you've owned the boat for any length of time and don't know what oil you've been putting in, you need to find another hobby...

I agree, simple enough, just change it so you know what you have in it.

.....or does he mean outdrive oil. Read the Merc. owner's or shop manual or buy one for your vintage engne/drive and purchase the mfg's rec. oil. If you don't no what's in it, change as suggested. Keep in mind you'll need a merc/quicksilver gear lube pump to replenish the gear case and upper housing. The Merc. Manual will have the capacity for your outdrive.

FYI, Lower the outdrive as far as you can. Do not let the skeg hit the pavement. Keep the skeg a couple of inchses of the pavement. You'll need to fill the outdrive from the lower gearcase drain, not the from the vent located on the upper housing. ....can't be done from the drive monitor either. However, once the case is full oil will drain out of the vent. Once you replace the vent and drain plugs, refill the outdrive monitor. You'll need to keep on eye on the monitor and refill as necessary as there will still be some air in the system.
