Have a 1998 mercury 7.2 454 motor that I just bought. my oil level is low and I want to top it off. the engine refers me to my owners manual which i don't have. any one know what kind of oil SR recommends for this motor?

How many hours has it been since a last change?
It may be time. If not, find out why you're burning oil and address it.

Scott has it right with the type, but I'd find out why you need so much.

I purchased the boat in September. I admit I didn't check the oil regularly, I have not noticed any smoke or smelled burnt oil when under way so I was surprised to not see oil on the dip stick yesterday when I started her up. I was concerned and did not let it get up to temp until I had some oil on hand. I would like to change the oil but I have never done that and don't have the oil pump gear. is this suff expensive?

Thanks all of you! sometimes all i need is some confidence and this site always gets me over to Westmarine noing what I need to take care of my project! Thanks scott! Great post.

Yeah, get the pump and change the oil. You're definitely due and now you can know how to do it and check it regularly. Best of luck.

I always change my own oil, filters and plugs. Its the best way to know what is happening inside the engine. The color of the oil can tell you a lot. Buy the best oil you can find. Its a lot cheaper than an engine job. I use Mercruiser's 20W-50 synthetic in my 8.1S Horizons.

As for checking engine oil - Never leave the dock without checking both engines. If not, you're asking for trouble. Keep a gallon of it on board. Don't forget the genny if you have one. Mine drinks a lot of oil.
Also see good advice from sferguson727.

CHANGE THE OIL REGULARLY - I CHANGE MY OIL EVERY 100 HOURS WITHOUT FAIL
