My bottom paint is in need of some touch up. I have no clue what kind it is. All I know is it was done at a marina in St Augustine Fl. The po had it done prior to me buying the boat. It will come off if you touch it. If you let the brush touch it while washing, it will turn the bucket of water blue.
Boat is trailer kept, so I'm not worried about the protection, it's just starting to look like crap. I don't want to go through the process of removing it, just touch it up so it will look fresh and clean.:smt100

Self polishing Ablative if it wears/rubs off. Use a roller to put it back on, Mike.

I've found the bottom paint that I need. Not sure about the color. They offer in a dark blue, and light blue. Mine looks like faded dark blue:huh: My thought is to use the dark, even if it is a little darker. Not sure:smt100

Black is always a safe color. Easy to get in the future, too - black is black.

Looks like Interlux Micron CSC from the pic. If you are putting a fresh coat on you should scuff it with #80 grit sandpaper to get proper adhesion.

You need a hard paint for a trailer or lift stored boat. Unfortunately, most hard paints are not compatible with ablative paints, but some are. Every paint manufacturer can address compatibility for the paint you plan to use.

Preparation is the key to a good bottom job. No, washing the bottom and repainting isn't going to cut it. At a minimum you need to sand the bottom with 80-100 grit sandpaper thoroughly, or so about 60% of he previously painted area is white with gelcoat showing. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts here. Cut corners and you'll pay for it in the long run with adhesion problems.

From the looks of it the paint is ready to be replaced. Don't take short cuts by trying to keep and touch up what is there. As Frank states, if the boat is trailered consult with your local boat yard for a recommendation for which paint to use.

I was hopeing for an easy touch up procedure. Since there is none. What are the steps for doing away with the bottom paint? That would be my preferenc.

Next to impossible if the bottom has been painted........somebody has already sanded the bottom so you'll have 80 grit sand marks to deal with and the bottom surface will be rough and look like crap. Try chemically stripping a small area top see what the glass underneath looks like, but be prepared to repaint it with a good hard paint....which will last indefinitely or until you scrape the bottom on something.

Welcome to the painted bottom boat club!
