After I poured gas all over my boots (cheap plastic gas container with a leaking cap with no gasket) while filling my snowblower, I decided it was time to find a new gas can.

I went to a local farm & fleet store and found more cheap made plastic containers with gimmicky pour spouts...or a $35 to $54 steel safety can. What the hell? Whatever happened to the good ole 2 gallon metal can with a vent and a pour spout?

After doing some online research, I read that some containers with the gimmicky spouts actually serve a special purpose...they regulate the maximum fill rate that you can pour fuel...some CARB BS as I understand.

I guess my choices are to buy the high end can or get a 5 gal plastic one and fill it half full so it will pour.

Anyone else tired of the plastic containers?

Keep checking garage sales!! I have bought probably 6 or 7 real nice gas cans with vents!! I will pay up to 20.00 for a good gas can with a vent! I think it should be mandatory for the person/s that came up with this ventless B.S. to have to be on the side of the road, in 33 degree weather with 25mph winds and try to put gas in their car:smt013:smt013:smt013:smt013:smt013

I too will pay $20 for a proper 5 gallon gas can.

Even the 5 gallon plastic ones come with that dorky fill mechanism. I have one can with that thing. . . .and DANG it is hard to use.

I'm with ya. I just recently bought two new ventless gas cans, with a little trigger top and a button I have to push before I can push the trigger, the same idea as on a power tool. WTF?! So now I have to sit there forever while I drain the can into my lawn mower, tractor, boat.... Hate 'em.

I have four of these for the gas guzzlers at home (lawn tractor, snow blower, etc.) and will never go back to the plastic ones. They are worth every penny:

(Actually, mine have a different spout with a vent and a locking lid. The spout stores in the handle. But, the can is identical.)

Most of the metal ones have rotted away from being left on wet garage floors! Plastic is cheaper, lighter, generates static electricity when you fill fast (and pour fast!)- which BTW is intresting if your are pouring gasoline; and will usually leak when you pour them - because they dont have tight fitting tolerances on the fittings.

I was using the large 5 gallon plastic cans for years. As a general rule we would always haul a 5 gallon can over to my buddies place when I would get a call to go wakeboarding (he lives on a small inland lake with no marina). It was a small price to pay for a couple of hours of fun every week. I ended up losing the spout to the can when my buddy dropped it on the ground from his pick up. Damn I wish I still had it. I bought a 2 gallon can for my mower/ snow blower and I curse that dam vent every time I use it. I ended up buying a big funnel and I use the can without the spout.
The conspiracy theorist in me blames the damn lobbyist's for the plastic tank companies. But I don't want to send this thread into the Holding Tank.

Why not just snow blow all the way to the gas station.....By doing this, you help with keeping the sidewalks clean of snow, maybe help an elederly person who can't do it, but most importantly, you can easily fill your snowblower direct from the pump......

PS....When going home, do the other side of the street!

Thank you.....The taxpayers

I drill a vent hole and plug it with a screw. Kind of sounds stupid, but when done correctly (no gas, rinsed with water), it works very well. Use a (plastic?) thumb screw so you can remove it easily.

I like the one that Two Peas has...I always called them a military can...aren't they called a "jerry can" or something? I should go to some farm sales, then again, most of the guys today have a tank that is tossed into the back of a pickup with a 12V pump.

Has anyone used one like this?

I read some good / some not so good reviews online. I normally store about 10 to 15 gallons of gas in my garage for the portable generator (oh no, what did I just say) snowblower etc. Maybe I should consider this type of can anyway...if it will pour. I still don't understand all this fancy crap on the fill spout end, CARB should be outraged at the amount of fuel that is spilled by the use of the rinky dink spouts!

 It is a looonnngg way to the gas station, I would be empty when I got back home. I'd have to get a gas can with a backpack strap...more spilling...damn.

Interesting....I thought about doing that and cutting a notch in the screw so it wouldn't need to be removed for venting, then using a rubber washer for the seal...but that doesn't solve my leaky spout.

It's funny you mention this. My dad was just complaining to me yesterday about these stupid cans. I (thank god) don't own a single one of these dumb cans. They are horrible.

I hate my plastic cans. I also have a problem with them stored to long pulling water out of the air with the ethanol in the fuel, poor seals. I have had two incidences with water in the plastic tanks during the spring, it sucks having to drain the two tanks on my comercial mower. I dont even store gas anymore.

I may be the lone dissenting voice here but I actually have gotten to like the evirocans especially for filling my small pieces of lawn equipment like my 4 cycle leaf blower. I did have the plastic spout extension come off in the gas tank of my John Deere Tractor but it won't hurt anything. I do agree that it takes longer to put 5 gallons in my tractor tank but I don't spill nearly as much on the driveway while filling other pieces of equipment. I actually like being able to turn the flow off before I remove the spout from the tanks. I could give a rat's ass about being enviro friendly but not having to smell spilt gasoline in my garage is a plus.

My marina owner has about 5 of the bigger one.

During the spring time people use them to put fresh gas in their boats. :smt001

Yeah, but in general the way you have to hold the *$&#^^ things, I can't see past the *$&^#%^& spout to see the ****342 fuel level while filling. That's when I create a huge &^%$$^& mess. Also why I never fill a tank in the garage. . . .

I have four of the old Eagle brand five gallon plastic gas containers and the rubber spouts have hardened over the years and cracked. I tried to buy new spouts the threads on the new ones will not fit the older containers. Do It store said, government regulation made the manufactures change as no tto let emmision in the air. I found spout in the internet that cost $12.00 each plus shipping.

Try this: Google FUEL JUG and/or FUEL JUG FILLER HOSE WITH SHUT OFF. You should see the jugs used to fuel motorcycles; they are vented and 5 gallons empties in about a minute. The hose with shut off gives you flow control and on/off.

Jugs are about $30, Filler hose less than $15. Most local motorcycle shops and online powersports accessories vendors sell them. Also on e-Bay, but quality unknown.
