I have to top off my drive lube on my port engine. Just wondering what you guys use and where you get it.

I use the Mercury/Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube. Personally I would not consider using anything else in a Mercruiser outdrive. I get mine at WalMart or Wholesale Marine if I am ordering other stuff and in a pinch West Marine, just cost more there.

...i heard dont mix different mfgs ... could clot?

Mercruiser HP Gear, my vote

Your signature doesn't mention what drives you have -- but assuming it's Bravo... Merc makes two different types of drive fluid, regular (dino oil) and synthetic. You MUST use the hi-perf/synthetic stuff in Bravo drives.

Link is not working for me. If it's Merc or Quicksilver, and it says Hi-Performance, then yes. Merc only makes two versions.

That's it, there is also the quicksilver label you can get an WalMart and Wholesale marine for @$11 / qt.

The High Performance gear lube is also blue/green in color. The regular stuff is amber.

Amsoil makes a marine specific synthetic 75w90. $9/ quart. Ive had good luck with their products in all my vehicles and toys. Give it a read on their website.

Mercruiser or quicksilver high performance sae90 synthetic gear lube is the only recommended gear lube for the bravo. It's relatively inexpensive at Walmart. I wouldn't run anything else.

I have been running Amsoil 75/90 severe gear for about ten years. This was after I was given direct information regarding drive lube testing from a very well known national performance engine and drive builder (I don't have permission to give their name). In short, they found most brands did very well including Merc, but found moderate reductions in fretting on gears with the Amsoil in very high horsepower applications. I was already using amsoil for other stuff, so I switched.

Importantly, with whatever drive lube you use, change it very often.

I was about to post the same thing. Mercruiser fluids are “sufficent”, not optimal. You cant buy a finer true synthetic marine outdrive gear lube. I used it exclusively in a Bravo outdrive in my previous boat.
