I've got barnacles on my 1 year old sea core out drive... power washer wont take off the very fine particles left... I know people say to not paint this drive, is that really true?

If so - what do you clean it with? Mechanics say just use some acid wash, if I can't paint the drive because of whatever special stuff it's made of...would washing it in acid mess it up too?

Just wondering what you guys have done w/ yours to get it back to nice and new looking!

Thanks..

Remove barnacles with paint scraper. If you are getting barnacles that seacore isn’t working as advertised.

Yeah, I'm not impressed with seacore to say the least. If I paint it, I ruin it right?

Paint mine every spring with some flat black stuff that works great, i can look at can when home and post later. Looking at that picture, you need af paint.
As far as ruin it, ask a dealer, but my take is what you gonna ruin? Stuff that dont work?
Back in the day Mercruiser had this electric Mercathode that didnt work worth a shit. They got rid of it. Sounds like Seacore is their new wiz bang magic snake oil.

Seacore is more about what is on the inside, than the outside. Meaning, as one example, the base aluminum is more corrosion resistant (should you get a scratch in the paint, for example). However, the outer paint is the same as a regular drive. So, yes, you can, and should, anti-foul the drive - just make sure to use a copper-free AF paint - usually these are labelled "eco".

FYI, Merc still uses an electronic anode - called Mercathode - and it works very well.

Yikes, the mechanic and some places google searched said not to mess with it !!

Any helpful links just for SEACORE drives?? Guess I've got a project for tomorrow!!

Okay, so I was sold a story, got it.

Now what? prep it as a regular drive? Kind of have to get this done tomorrow...does anyone know where to get the mercury instructions on how to paint seacore drives? Google search didn't turn up much! Thank you for all your help!

just scrape off the barnicles with a plastic scraper and get a quart of trilux (the spray version does not work nearly as well) and paint it over everything that is black on the drive (do NOT paint the sacrificial anodes) - i would not scratch through the original black paint - seacore is corrosion protection only. you were not "sold a story", you just dont understand the difference between corrosion resistence and anti-fouling - doing the job correctly will take a few hours

The story the mechanic told me was "this drive doesn't need to be painted" :)

Okay, so a quart of trilux, no sanding, scrape it off with plastic scraper, will do today. thanks

+1 on Trilux 33. Brush it on. It’s thick. Looks ugly. Won’t win a beauty contest but is the best stuff out there if you wet slip the boat. It’s been applied to my drive every year since new in 2007 and haven’t had any issues.

Cleaned up real nice, hopefully this keeps the growth off the drive this season...prop clean tomorrow, then in she goes. (No this isn't a searay, but I'm from another brand in which not many had this "special" drive...)

Got Bravo 1, dont see the things on transom or the interior box.
I don't know when they started using it - you asked if they dropped it at some point. Plus, at 3 decades old, all bets are off in regards to what previous owners have done. Standard issue Mercathode is not on the transom.
