What can you tell me about 5.7 merc bluewater engines?

I'm on a 6000 acre lake so the 5.7s would probably work for me if it planes without to much fuss. The Carver 325 is the same weight and had 5.7s. It planed quickly with 5 of us on board (and an engine running on 7 cylinders!).

Nice 300DA. Those are pretty boats. I am stuck on a bridge boat though and a 300 is not a big enough jump from my 290DA.
Here is a pic the service manager sent me of the hole in the valve of the 5.7 crusader (in the Carver 325 I was sea trialing last week).

Wow....what do you think caused that hole in the valve?
 
Don't know. The first sea trial failed when the motor bogged and would not go over 2000 rpm. We found debris in the filter and tank. After cleaning the tank and a few weeks of running the boat with frequent filter cleanings, they called and said it was good to go.

I wonder if the repeated "lean" condition the motor was subjected to while clearing out the debris caused the damage?
 
I just drove 3 1/2 hrs from a third failed sea trial that involved a bad engine, $585 to a surveyor, five 2/12 hr round trips to the boat, and almost three months of my time....hence the crossed arms. Actually I was smiling while looking at that spotless 330!

Damn, I probably would have flipped the camerma man/woman off if I went though all of that for nothing. Good luck on your next search!

I had a 1979 26 ft searay that weighed over 9,000 lbs fully loaded (100 gal fuel, 40 gal water and guest) It was under powered with a Merc 260 (5.7). I blew a hole on a piston caused by detonation. I see a similar situation here. Be careful of underpowered boats.
