My boat came with the exterior fine mesh screen wrapped around the outside of the front windshield. What's the use routine for this? Should I leave it on all the time and only take it off to clean a few times a year? Or should I leave it off except when the hot sun warrants its use?

Edit: darn iphone changed "shade" to "shadow" in the title. Sorry about that.

I'm tuning in to hear what others do with this. Curious as to how well it reduces heat indoors.

I had a white screen material called Phifertex (sp?) on the windows of my 330 and around the cockpit. It kept it about 20 degrees cooler inside than the outside ambient temp.

I left it on above the windshield and around the cockpit all summer, but not on the windshield itself. I felt it restricted my ability to see forward when driving the boat.

Now I have a white Stamoid cover for the windshield of Beachcomber and it stays on all year because I drive from the flybridge. If the weather gets nasty and I want to drive from below I take that windshield cover off, but other than that it stays on all year.

My 400 DB came with both a white and a black screen. I use the white one because I think it reflects the light a keeps us cooler. I hate that it messes up our view. I plan to change it out for a very dark tint.

Bill,

That's exactly what I do. Since we don't have lower helm there's no need for clear viz via the windshield. As others said, having it on all the time makes a huge difference on the sunny days, but the other thing is the mash gives you is privacy. So, other than for cleaning purpose I have no reason taking it off. Obviously, when there's a storm coming you wouldn't want to leave it on either, to be blown away.
