I am about ready to install a new autopilot. I am considering changing the current location of compass sender from under the head sink to a little nook under the aft berth. Install instructions say to keep it away from metal that could cause a false reading. Makes sense. This planned location is very close to fuel tanks. To avoid opening the aft berth platform so I can see the tanks, can anyone tell me if they are Aluminum, steel or stainless ? Hoping they are not straight steel so magnetic properties will be a non issue.

I would think aluminum or maybe even plastic. Never seen steel or SS tanks on a boat.
Mine are aluminum.

Our 1986 Weekender had two aluminum tanks.

Mine on my 88 Weekender are aluminum

Unless they were replaced by a PO then they are definitely aluminum. Plastic is almost never used on inboard application for combustible fuels and only for grey water etc.

Plastic is certainly used on inboard/stern drive boats for fuel, but typically you'll only see this on smaller boats, say under 30' - but in that smaller range, it's very common. As other noted, unless it's been changed, it would be aluminum.

Oh my gosh, 5 responses and all are mostly likely thinking aluminum with some caveats. Thank you all. I know they are original so al. it is. At unlike most things this is the answer I was hoping for. Thanks all.
