What Am I Missing?

We are closing in on the day to leave for the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell, which will be a 2200 mile tow. I'm just about done with everything I can think of in preparation. But, maybe I'm missing something that you'll spot. So, here's what I've done:

  • Trailer and truck tires are aired up, inc the spares. The trailer tires are rated for max load at 50 PSI so I have them at 45 PSI

    TIA,
    Gary

  • I'd inflate the tires to 50 PSI.

Westie - Thanks. I think I agree with that.

Garry/John - The props are Hill Marine's 22 Four X 4's. When I got the boat it had 26" Merc 3 blades and it ran out 48 MPH (GPS) at 5000 RPM - @ 700' elevation - and not stellar out-of-the-hole performance. Obviously that won't cut it for Powell, so I shopped around. I found used Merc 22's and 24's, mostly 3x3's, on Craigslist and eBay for about $600, but if you buy them they are yours. Finally I talked to John Hill and he said he would work with me for $1050. We tried their 24's but they were still too tall so he shipped me the 22's. Wow! If you aren't ready it'll take the ski rope away from you, and it still runs out 48 MPH at 5200 R's. But, they act like a high-stall torque converter. Up until 3200 RPM they haven't truly hooked up, meaning it is like you are in a slightly lower gear until then. So you have excellent bottom end but still have the top end for cruising. I love them.

I was at Powell last Wed through Sunday. 22 pitch on a 270 Sundeck with a 496 had plenty of power to pull up slalom skiers with 85 gallons of gas, 24 gallons of fresh water, and some fat passengers, and still hit max RPMs.

As far as preparedness for a long trip, I have long been taking a floor jack in the bed of the truck. It is so much better when you have a flat on the trailer or tow vehicle.

Any suggestions on must-see sights? (That's to any of you.)

As for a floor jack, if I had an aluminum one I might. But, mine are waaaay to heavy to be picking up and placing in the bed - for an old guy like me.

Anyway, it sounds like you are pitched about right. Lots of power in that 496.

must see sights? Sure. Thinking of things reasonably close to Dangling Rope.... Rainbow bridge of course. Just around the corner from there is Oak Canyon. It has some great beaches, and great exploring if you have kayaks or PWC's. There are literally miles of slot canyons to explore that are breathtaking.

Just a little further from Oak Canyon is Reflection Canyon. It has limited beaches, but the ones it has are beautiful and remote. Reflection Canyon is well worth a sight-see by boat even if you don't stay there.

Downlake from Dangling Rope is Last Chance Canyon. Not much by way of beaches, but a beautiful boat ride...

Really is an awesome lake. Enjoy!

Thanks! Yes, it is an awesome lake. We have been there three times, but those times were in the 70's & 80's, so it has been quite some time and our memories of what to see are somewhat dimmed. So I appreciate the suggestions.

We leave in 2 hours and 15 minutes, but who is counting? Thanks to all for the help in getting prepared. I'll post about the journey as well as the time on the lake when we get back.
