The Westerbeke generator on my ‘88 340 Sundancer has recently started shutting down after 2-3 hours of its initial run. If I let it sit for an hour, it will run for an hour then shutdown again. I’ve run out of ideas, any advice appreciated.

Check the exhaust/hot water sensor. They are cheap, well Westerbeke cheap and easy to replace. When was the last impeller change and tuneup? Including the oil in its govenor.

Impeller, tune up, oil change and new fuel pump in March 2022. Problem started in mid June. Thanks for your advice. Yeah, I understand Westerbeke cheap. LOL

The governor is oil filled with appro 2.5oz of oil 30w. Even at .25oz low it can give the set the fits. I’d start there even tho it sounds more like the sensor. You can still get them on the Westerbeke site

I have to admit I did not know the governor was filled with oil. I’m going to the boat tomorrow and check that first. Thanks

Many folks don’t even the dealer that sold me the boat never knew. He had put several boat dollars into mine before I took ownership. I finally just took it as is, guy on my dock fixed it in ten minutes

I didn't know this either, can someone show a pic where you add this oil for the governer

There is a screw on top for fill, a screw on the bottom for drain (fill and drain are towards the pulley) and a screw in the back (opposite the pulley) for "full'. I seem to recall them being hex/allen wrench. Remove the bottom and top, let drain. Close the bottom, open the one in the back. Fill from the top until it overflows from the back (like a differential on a car). Close the back and top and ready to go.

There is also a small gas filter on the carb (at the fuel line) that should be cleaned. Talk about Westerbeke pricing; the tiny filter is $45.

The fuel filter is shown on page 44.

Can you syphon the oil out of the Governor through the fill hole? My drain plug is rounded over.

not really... there's all kinds of stuff in the way. probably best to just take a pump type oil can, stuff the tube in as far as you can, and pump a whole lot in, and flush out the old...

or just make certain it's full. realize that, in applications where they are self contained, that oil isn't subject to contamination from combustion artifacts or significant condensation. you want it to stay clean and not too thick, aside from that, just not too low.
