I have a gas 1999 40 DA and the generator is located on the starboard side. I recently bought the boat. I don't believe the spark plugs and wires have ever been changed on the generator. And I have to admit, I don't see how they can be accessed. Has anyone ever changed the plugs and wires on their similar 40 DA?

Welcome to CSR.

I felt the same way when I first saw my generator. It's possible. You'll need a thin wall spark plug socket (with rubber washer to hold the plug in the socket) and a 3 inch extension with a swivel. I stood aft of the starboard engine facing the generator. I worked from right to left removing one plug/wire at a time. The first two plugs came out easier than expected, the last plug was the toughest. You really need to be able to see with your fingers.

To insert the new plugs I put an old piece of rubber fuel line over the terminal and lowered them into the hole. You can also use the fuel line to start threading them into the hole. Once the threads have started, pull the hose off the plug and use the socket to tighten.

My advice would be to rest up between each plug. Get out of the boat and walk around. You don't want to stay in that position too long.

Good Luck

I was going to say the same thing. I think the '99 has a 7.2 instead of a 7.0 like I have, but while the plugs are nearly impossible to see, they're actually easy to reach.

Do you have a son/grandson who is thin and nimble? That is your best option, lol!
Agree with others that it looks more involved than it is.
