I'm thinking about having my marina add a Westerbeke generator to my 2010 280 Sundancer, 496 MAG. Accessories include 8,000BTU A/C/Heat, water heater, microwave, 1,500 Watt built in Grille.

The boat is in a lake and gen will get light use on weekends. I'm considering the 3.0W Westerbeke MPV at 165 lbs. Sea Ray factory options for this boat are 5.0 or 4.0 Koehler. I'm thinking the lighter MPV generator will have less effect on the handling characteristics of the boat, and is a 4.0 or 5.0W really necessary? I've heard Westerbeke is more reliable and quieter than Koehler.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

My 3kw onan runs my AC and microwave at the same time....don't know about the grill.

I've got an electric grill on mine and she pulls some serious Amps at the Dock! We've tried to use the grill once on shore power (30 Amp service) with the AC unit and TV w/Sat. and several below deck lights on and it kept turning off! What was strange was it didn't trip the Breaker it just shut off! Went to turn it on again and it would shut down after a few second or so! We ended up using the Galley stove (Which is Electric/Alcohol ?) with a Fry Pan to cook the Tube Steaks????? That built in Electric Grill should only be used at the Dock!
Just My 2 Cents :smt101

Add up the total wattage assuming you are running AC, stove, micro at the same time to determine ideal size. I know my 5K Kohler handles it all but.

Great video. After owning the MPV, are there any things you would've done differently? It sounds like a 5W gen really isn't necessary on this size boat.

Nice information on the 3.0 (and wow is it compact). The 4.5 I have is disproportionally larger. Wish I would have seen this last year as it might have opened more options for us.

+1 on the 3.0 mpv - I installed on on my 300 this year - did not have to relocate anything and was able to lift it into the ER with a buddy - as far as power, it makes 25A as opposed tho the 30A shorepower so we have not noticed a difference in managing the loads. It is easy to service and does the job. Someone on here has a used unit for sale - that is the way I went and saved a lot of money!

I love my Westerbeke 3.0 MPV. We were out this past weekend and I can second the fact that the AC is louder than the generator. Running the AC and microwave at the same time is no issue at all. Can't speak for the grill.

Thanks for the responses! I'm going to look further into the MPV configuration for my boat.
