I am in the process of changing out the impellar on the raw water side of the genny. It is an 8 BTD and the impellar housing is in the rear of the genny. My wife can fit back there and can almost touch it with a long screwdriver to remove the 6 screws in the cover plate. I can't even get back there to reach it. Has anyone replaced the impellar? Do I have to remove the motor mounts to get to this thing? I don't see an access panel behind the steps to the galley on the other side.
Frank, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Girlfriennnnd.
I dont know how much room you have, but I squeeze my head and upper torso over the top of the gen and reach down to do the work. I can also crawl and wedge in the sides to do this. If the cover plate and screws are in good shape it should be pretty easy and go over top, if its been awhile you might just go in the side and back and remove the whole pump.

Dave, Thanks, I am a bagle shy of 240 lbs. I can't get on top or around either side. I have been lodged in the engine room replacing the port side impellar on the cats. I am kinda gun shy. But thanks for the reply!

I'd send the GF down to do the job....just don't tell the wife.

Sorry...could not resist

Especially since you can't get on top!!!

Sorry again....just finished reading the joke thread on this site. Very funny reading.

It is a lot easier to remove the entire pump from the accessory drive housing than it is to try to change the 8 BTD impellor in place on some boats. I also find that you are a lot less likely to get cover leaks when you work on the pump on a bench in front of you.

Have 420ac went in storage room in front of stairs and cut a hole put a water tight hatch have to move ac box on the wall cut a small hole and look nothing else back there sea ray should have done this takes 10 min to change pump.

Twyant, thanks for the info ! A little more than I expected to do for a yearly task, you're right, Sea Ray should of done this....appreciate the information, looks like next weekend the saw zaw comes out !

I know this is an old thread but has anyone cut an access panel in their transom to replace this impellor?
Dave I would love to have you come change the impellor for me.
I would pay money to see you do that.
Some designer somewhere needs a good kicking for making that impellor so hard to change out.
I now know how GIRLFRIEND III feels.

My secret is a double jointed monkey...........nowhere near the overhead of a girlfriend.

Steve.........stick with it, you are resourceful. 3 bolts and 2 hose clamps hold the pump on. You can reach them blind, but you cannot refit the cover and gasket blind. Take the pump off the generator and change the impeller on a bench.............and you won't even have to buy monkey food!

I'm a little monkey and changed mine in place. feel free to send me an airline ticket when the time comes and i'll change it for you.

I am certain the time has come as we had an automatic shutdown on the genny. No water from exhaust port.

Took your advice Dave, as business has forced me to head home.(pity)

Seriously though found a semi retired CAT man here in the port
( population about 350).

He does not advertise just word of mouth, the place is like a secret society.

Frank, as the manual is so comprehensive can you tell me does the pump drive return easily into its housing on refitting.?

I have a 2000 400 sedan bridge with the 8kw westerbeke and to get to the pump I removed 3 of the mounting bolts and pivoted the whole genset out about 6" or so. Not too bad and the only way I think it could be done. What a poor design by sea ray.
Steve
