Okay, here is the problem (compounded by me)...... after several days of running the gen shut down without warning. I found an 8amp fuse on the gen mounted control panel that was blown, replaced and started, shut down, blown again. Fast forward, used a larger fuse and no start, no nothing, probably blew something else. If I understand correctly this circuit contains all the sensors and the remote control panel? If a sensor goes bad it defaults to ground and blows the fuse? And now something else has been compromised - a diode, relay or circuit board that the fuse was protecting? Any input, experience or advice is appreciated - I am having a heck of a time finding someone to work on it.
thank you

Hey Russ - long time no see - didn't know you had upgraded to a 480DB! Nice! as for the generator - not sure about your problem, but I can tell you Old Lyme Marina is really good with Westerbeke

I know it! Dropped out for a bit, I did- just bought her in Naples and ran her home to RI. A great trip! How have you been?

must have been - did you do the okeechobee or keys route? wish i knew, family has been on the boat in ft lauderdale since 7/1 (i fly back and forth).....looking at upgrading too, the 300 is getting a bit small.....

We went the keys, bummer! Nice down in FL - what are you thinking of? Should have bought my 460 - was almost perfect by the time I was done. Still not sure if I made the right decision! I gave her away, I wanted to move -
is the boat up here or FL?

New boat is up here....38DA.......and I feel the same way, mine is in great shape, new motor, gennie service, rebuilt the head, new batteries and charger, fresh buff etc, etc.....just where I want it and now facing starting over......oh well, we'll see how it goes!

 It's a sickness!

Russ,

I didn't realize you have a Westebeke? I thought they all came with Onan's? Was it changed?

Take a look at this. There are two wires to the Sys Monitor. One to give a generator run signal and one for oil pressure which is to alarm should the unit shut down unintended (not necessarily due to an oil pressure problem). What is not clear is if that oil pressure switch is closed with oil pressure or open. So first ensure the system monitor is getting a run signal (which we know it is as you are alarming) then test if an open circuit or closed circuit to ground alarms on that oil pressure wire. That oil pressure switch is not Westerbeke but Sea Ray. It may be a normally open or normally closed pressure switch; need to determine which it is.

I have an older Westerbeke 12.5KW. Along with the gauges and there senders there are also over temp and low oil pressure senders as well. There are two kinds of engine protection switches that can be used. One type is re-settable and the other is a one shot. either way, they both pull the ignition to ground to kill the engine instantly. The one shot type will make and stay there (always to ground). The re-setting type will re-set when the condition is corrected. If it's the temperature, when it cools down. If it's oil it will re-set upon re-power and some time delay (few minutes depends on the sender). An easy way to tell if it's the protection senders is to use an ohm meter from one of the senders and ground, the meter should red an open or very hi resistance. It would be a virtual short if the sender is still made.

I would start there. You can also remove the shut down wire at the source, but only if your sure the engine is ok. That would tell you if that circuit is ok or not.

Thanks for the help, there was a combination of issues, first sensors (2) and then a relay and fuse holder. Anyone needs details let me know!
