After resetting my GFI, I plugged in the space heater. The heater promptly started smoking. I plugged in heater inside the house---no problem; heats up fine.

What's my likely problem and how do I troubleshoot/repair?

Thanks

Had the heater been run this year yet? If not maybe it had some dust or lint on the coils that had to burn off.

Runs fine when plugged into the household power. The boat is connected to shore power that is connected to the house.

I'd guess that the length of your extension cords has a lot to do with it. The longer the cord, the larger the voltage drop. If you want to use it in the boat get an extension cord that's large enough (wire size) for the distance from the wall plug to the boat. Google it and you should be able to determine what size wire you'll need for the distance you need to go..

sounds good---I have to make some purchases there tomorrow anyway.

Thanks
