WATSONVILLE, Calif. (BRAIN) — Boating retailer West Marine is recalling about 4,600 folding bikes sold in its stores and on it's website. The bike frames can break during use, the retailer said.

The recall involves two models — the Jetty Express 2 and the Port Runner 2. The Jetty Express 2 has a blue and white frame and folds at a hinge in the middle. Jetty Express 2 is printed on the bike's frame. The Port Runner 2 has a red frame and folds at a hinge in the middle. Port Runner 2 is printed on the bike's frame. The bikes were made in China and sold from March 2010 through July 2013 for between $300 and $400.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, West Marine has received three reports of the frames breaking, resulting in bruises and scrapes to a rider.

Consumers should immediately stop using the affected bikes and return them to West Marine for a free replacement bike. Consumers can contact West Marine at (800) 262-8464 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or online at westmarine.com. "

They have been quite good. Very happy with performance, they are very heavy. What would you buy as a mini folding bike? I like Bike Friday a lot but they cost 4-5 times as much.

i just bought 2 schwinn hinge bikes. got them off ebay for only about $140 apiece. i'm very happy with the quality. i looked at others that were way more expensive, but these are pretty great, and i can replace a few times over what other brands and models cost. they are fixed gear, but it's mostly flat at the beach.

and bonus, they come with a nice carrying bag that stows easily. but yes, they weight easily 30 plus pounds. my road bike weighs 16.

The folding bike are a great addition to our boating. Your weights are about the same as ours, the "little" folding bike is nearly double a great road bike. LOL I could not do what we do with a single speed, We have a dune shoreline and lots of short steep climbs that few riders could do on a single speed. My folders are part billy goat and go where some basic mountain bikes would be needed. If money were not part of the equation, "Bike Friday" brand would be my choice. They run $2-4K depending on the model. Like all bikes, it all goes back to what you are willing to pay for a super light but still super strong bike.
