Well the time has come and I am thinking of selling the boat this year. Call it estate planning, or whatever, my lower back is screwed up, arthritis (degenerative disease of L-4 and 5) I am married again and if something happens to me, it would be easier for my wife. I do not plan on dirt napping at the moment, but I will soon be 64. So I would rather take care of things while still able.

No I am not dead at the moment, but I would just like to simplify things while I can.

It has been fun.

Oh man, it pains me to hear that! I just turned 50 & have a similar back condition. I can't see me selling but then talk to me in 14 years I guess. I wish you luck with the sale and in the future, just sorry to hear things like this. Be well.

Rather than condolences, I have a little different view on this……and it is from a similar perspective age wise. I would urge you to not be in a hurry to get out, unless you just don't enjoy boating any longer. I have found that as I get older, well, stuff does hurt in more and different places than it used to. I have gradually moved away from the more labor intensive maintenance jobs like detailing and hull polishing, bottom painting, shaft work, water pump replacement on stud engine & generator, etc. I'm spending a little more $$ but spending more time on the water and enjoying it more. Much to the chagrin of the 10 or so folks who have asked me to call them when I get old and want to sell my 450DA…….I have no plans to get out of boating because these Sundancers are so easy to handle and fun to run that I am just not ready to circle the wagons and climb in a rocker.

There is a financial reason to not get in a hurry as well. There is a limited inventory of very clean used 38+ft Sea Rays out there. Sure, there are numbers, but when you look at condition of the boats for sale, most have problems. Then, the sport yacht business fell off the table in 2008. This all adds up to your boat at least holding its value and perhaps even appreciating in the next few years.

But, if you are done, then you are done and I wish you the best as you move on to the next phase of your life.

I'm a firm believer that people should live life to the fullest and the way they want. So, I'm not preaching....and I'm not judging. I've also not walked your walk....

I don't have any idols or heroes, per se, yet this guy inspired me. Listen to his words.....

I can relate to what you're saying. I'm 67 and definitely feeling the aches and pains, more at some times than others, but they're there. I think being able to putz around in the boat helps to keep me limber and that's a good thing.

I'm looking ahead to when I'm in my mid-70's and thinking that's the time I'll want to get rid of Beachcomber. I still have a few more long distance trips to make before we do that, but I can see it coming on the distant horizon.

I kind of move back and forth between downsizing to a smaller boat we can trailer (280 Sundancer?) to other lakes, or possibly even moving from boating to buying a motorhome. I've been 'shopping' on Craigslist to see what is out there, what sizes appeal to us and features I like and don't like. Much like the looking I did before buying a boat for the first time.

I wish you well in your future endeavors.

I understand where you are coming from.

I turned 53 on Saturday.

My L5/L6 went totally in about 96, I had had issues for years. But that episode put me on the floor, literally, I lay on our wooden floor for 3weeks, I had a computer set up beside me for a Uni course I was doing at the time.

I had a laminectomy done.

Then around 2003 my neck went C3/4 C5/6, I settled it down over 3 months, no driving, lots of pain killers, a friend picked me up on a morning and dropped me at my warehouse, and my secretary would drop me home. In 2010 they went past my pain threshold, and I had an operation.

I still struggle, in that I can walk for Miles, I have energy etc, but physical labour knocks the crap out of me.

My boating answer was offloading the trailer boat and going to the moored boat. I can potter around with the maintenance, I still service my own engines, however what pre all of this would have taken me 2 hours, takes me the day.

I can't polish the boat, so I pay, same with washing and polishing my cars. Any major maintenance jobs, eg. The manifolds on the boat are due for inspection and new gaskets, I get done.

Personally and this is personal, my boat is my relaxation, and I wouldn't move it on.

Just be careful of relegating yourself as old cripple too young, 64 to me is too young.
Though believe I understand the discomfort involved

I am wrestling with the same decision myself (as I have for the last few years). I'll be 72 this year and still do as much work on my boat as I can but with numerous "old age issues" creeping up on me, I am afraid the decision to sell is right around the corner. It's just a really tough decision as I love being on the water.

Best of luck with selling your boat.

I was wondering the same thing. My back was pretty bad at a younger age. One artificial disc and a fusion with a plate and screws later, I am good to go! (cool X-Rays too)

55 last month and just started boating again two years ago. I guess I'm lucky, one child wants the house and land, the other wants the boat...whichever boat I end up with

Humph, I would love some feedback from you on the artificial disc, they arent mainstream over here. When my neck was done, I changed neurosurgeons as my previous one did not do Replacement Discs. With my neck I was particularly concerned as the research I did indicated that because of the amount of movement in the neck, it was common after a lamenectomony for the disc abopve or below to go, as the movement transferred.

I found a surgeon who did the replacement with Titanium discs. However when we went through he didnt feel we needed to go that major at that time, and suggested a minor op, scrape and clean, or mechanics terminology, port and polish of the two discs. And that has worked........to a fairly good level. However I am aware of my lower back and neck, and that down the track the possibility could arise again.

I had read a few good reports from the States of patients who had done it, so as I said would love to hear your thoughts

There was something in my clipboard which I did not notice, and I must have wanted to edit something there, but pasted in the clipboard item in memory. I know of no way to change the title or I would do so? I wanted it to display;

If some admin can do it go for it.

I appreciate the answers and comments provided by you members so far. Thanks

Howard,

That's funny! When I opened the thread I thought it was about a rendezvous of some sort. That's why I was so surprised (as you can see in my response) when I read your original post!

Re: The only possible dates I see as so far available for us are June 29 or 30, 2014.

I kinda agree with Frank. If you're done you're done. I can also say, don't be too hasty. I will be 64 in April and I have 2 metal knees, probably looking at a hip down the road but I will be boating as long as I can physically handle the vessel safely.

We have 3 years (or less) until retirement and we are then planning the next saga. We are planning to sell the house, move onto the boat and cruise for 5 years. Somewhere along the way we hope to find a place to get back on land but there will still be a boat involved somehow.

Good luck with your decision.

Shawn

I agree with the others...64 seems very young to be so old! I'm 53, and plan to live to 95, then being shot by a jealous husband.

Seriously, I think that we are as old as we feel. Modern medicine has helped a lot of people live long and productive lives.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Quick hijack....I'll be at MWYC this weekend Shawn, will you be around?

I like your thinking. I've always said I when I get old I want to die in the arms of an 18 year old nymphomaniac. Sort of one of those things were people can say..."Yup, Mike came and went all in the same moment. Lucky guy!"

Ian, the surgery was the best thing I ever did (other than buy my Sea Ray). The recovery time is for the opening in my belly to heal. The fusion recovery was much longer since. I couldn't BLT (bend, lift or twist) while the bone was fusing but. I was in pretty good shape after 4 months. I started back playing golf in less than a year but have backed off of that figuring I am pushing my luck. PM me if you have any questions. I did a ton of research prior to allowing someone to crack me open and play with my spine.

Could ya possibly get by with something smaller and trailerable? In the event that you check out, the executor of your estate could easily sell it. That way you'll still have a way of getting out there for some R & R now and then. It's good for the body and mind, even if it's a broken body and a forgetful mind. All the best to ya.
