I am looking for weather options for my Garmin 4010. It looks like I can get XM Weather but from what I can tell the actual receiver is not sold anymore. The iPhone thread got me thinking can I somehow get weather on my MacBook and broadcast that information over my NMEA network to my 4010? If so, are there weather packages that can run on my MacBook that would give me weather maps?

Basically my goal is to see weather maps as close to real time as possible so that we can see if storms are coming.

You need Garmin's GLD 30A. It's still available. Includes the antenna and black box unit and connects via the Garmin network. Just add the XM weather package of your liking. It will do exactly what you want: real-time graphical weather information on your boat.

The GLD 30 is discontinued. The difference between 30 and 30A is XM radio. GLD 30 could not receive it (only weather).

I don't have it, but have seen photos of the weather in use. Very nice. It can overlay weather data on multiple screens.

I have the GDL30A. I love it. There's a 4 minute delay in the NEXRAD radar products, but that's not a big deal if you keep an eye on the sky (at least in Florida). I have found it to be highjly accurate and the chart overlay while animating the images is awesome.

You should be able to find one of these units on eBay or by calling around to suppliers that may have one or two left. From what I can tell, they seemed to be bundled more than sold as a stand alone unit.

Good luck in your search.

Has anyone connected the XM weather radio to the Clarion unit for XM radio?
