My ex girlfriend just bought an 85 270, she had it surveyed just for info. the survey came up with a weak transom. She bought the vessel anyway because it was the owner was only asking 4k. because of the transom she got it for 35, plus a spare 170 motor. My question is, is there a way to strengthen the transom without pulling the motors and drives? a mechanic told her he could re glass it after it's out of the water. let it dry out really well, then reglass it without pulling motors and drives. does that sound possible?

ps: she found the boat at my marina... do you have any idea how awkward it is leaving the marina with another chick :smt021

:wow: a weak transome you need a survayor the boat has rot BIG problem this is more then fiberglass..EXGIRL FRIEND !!!WHO HAS A SOFT ASS???

pull motors/drives
strip transom
cut out soft sections
install marine board
reglass

thats the ONLY way to do it

I would want a full check of all stringers and ALL of the transom...
YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW SOFT THE HULL MAY BE,WHY DID IT ROT?
WATER INSIDE /OUTSIDE CRACKED HULL ,TRU FITTING

did stringer test. she did a survey, all ok except the transom. it is from the bottom to about 1/4 up the transom, maybe a little less. the stringers are ok. the port motor needs the timing adjusted, the starboard has few hours on it. she wanted to know if she could fix it without pulling the motors. I don't know why I'm checking this:smt021, but she can't do it herself. we are still good friends, so here I am.

need to get to both side's of the site..

It all depends on the extent and location of the damage.
On an I/O boat, the thrust is transferred from the drive to the transom, not the engine itself to the stringers.
Because of the big azz hole that's cut in the transom for the drive, this area is typically the place that has the rot/water damage, and the drive would need to be removed to repair the area. I don't see why the inner skin couldn't be left in place- and the engine as well.

The survey should be more specific as to where the "weak" area(s) are... if his report doesn't say... call him and discuss. If the damaged area(s) are well outboard the drive, it's conceivable that the outer skin could be removed in those areas and a new core laminated in place without removal of the drive. Need more info...

My $02.

Just had my transom redone and its certainly alot more than $500 worth of repairs.

Mine was done from the inside with motor transom assembly and outdrive off.

They cut through the fiberglass skin and then cut out the wood leaving the outside fiberglass in tact. Then glassed in new wood and glassed over that and cut out new outdrive opening. This way you dont have to deal with any finishing on the outside.

If the transom is weak from the bottom up 1/4th of the way, more than likely the outdrive openings are rotted.

I would say get with the surveyor. If he says it can be done without pulling the motors he should know. Everyone else has not seen the damage. It could have been cause by a small though hole leaking. We are just speculating and the surveyor has the facts.
Good Luck!

how much did it run you? I see you're in essex, I'm in edgewood. I can get her to take it there to fix if it is affordable. It will be in the off season though

the surveyor suggested that she not buy the boat, then brought her on his 40' sea ray and hit on her. she doesn't really know if she should trust him at this point. she trusts the mechanic more, he said it could be done without pulling the motors.

Sorry about the late reply .... havent been on here in awhile.

Mine cost me $1200 to be repaired.
It was done by Tim at Fiberglass unlimited.
He's local and can come to your location probably.
I see he's posting in the Baltimore craigslist.

I had some rot around the outdrive opening so he cut out about 18 inches all the way around and down to the bottom.

He did a great job on the repair but not such a great job of cutting out the outdrive opening ... lol.

He's a better fiberglass guy than a carpenter!!
