We were boating in the ICW near Ft Myers, Florida at about 22 mph. I felt a very noticeable thump on the hull and wheel. I slowed to idle and saw something in the water behind us. We turned around and spotted a 20 inch or so sea turtle struggling in the water. We really did not who to call so we called the local police department who does have a couple of boats and routinely monitors the waters around Sanibel Island. They said they would contact FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission) we also tried to contact them without success. The water was a dark color due to the proximity of the Caloosahatchee River so the turtle blended in with the water color.

We stayed close to the turtle to prevent other boats from hitting it. About 45 minutes later a Sanibel Island Police boat showed up and retrieved the turtle from the water. We were heart broken to see a mangled flipper and the bottom of the shell shattered.

Sanibel Island has a wildlife rehab clinic called C.R.O.W. where the turtle was taken. Crow had our contact info from the police officer and contacted to let us know the turtle was an endangered Green turtle weighing about 50 pounds. They also gave us a patient number so we can check in on its progress.

I do not know if we were the first boat to hit it or if was injured prior to us hitting it. We tried to hail marine patrol on the VHF but were unsuccessful. We now have some local telephone numbers for FWC and local law enforcement programmed into our phones for future reference.

It is a sick feeling to injure a marine animal and to see it suffer. I feel good about how we dealt with it and will make a nice donation to the reahab clinic.

Our boat is coming out of the water today and I will check the hull for damage. I checked the prop and skeg and found no damage.

Poor turtle. It's tricky boating down in Florida, lots of wildlife. When we had the boat in Florida, every day we had to steer clear of animals. One time I had to hold position and wait for a manatee to get out of my slip. Dolphins get right up on your boat, I kept thinking I was going to mangle one. I did see a couple of turtles that met a boat floating in the ICW.

You do have to contend with wildlife if you boat in Florida......and some of it will eat you and your dog.

But, seeing and existing with these beautiful creatures in their world is also one of the things that is most appealing about boating here. Deal with the minor inconveniences and enjoy the experience.

That was pretty nice of you to rescue the turtle. Heck, I would have brought him home and ate him for dinner.

Only wildlife I have to watch out for here are floating dead carp....and logs. :smt009

We do have Bald Eagles though.

They are supposed to be delicious. Now I'm getting hungry.

We have a similar situation but sometimes a go fast boat will show up and then the scenery can go from ugly to WOW in a heart beat! I just have to make sure to keep the sunglasses on and the jaw closed so my wire doesn't beat me!!

And here it s...I found it and the report from the autopsy said "struck by boat"

LOL, my dad would probably bring it home and use as turtle soup.. It's very nice of you helping the turtle.. I've never hit any turtles and I've seen many snapping turtle up the river..

Sorry about the turtle. In SC I almost hit an alligator swimming across the river. At first I thought it was a log so I turned a little. It kept moving, I thought "wow, that's some current" so turned some more, it sped up. We passed it and saw what it was. The admiral didn't do anymore swimming after that.

Jim,

I'm sorry you guys had that experience. I know some here are poking fun, but clearly it bothered you guys. These things happen, sadly. It's much like hitting a deer while driving. None of us wants to impact/injure wild life (bad for us and bad for them). You guys did a lot more than many other boaters would do, so take heart in that.

Thanks all, I can see the humor. Our friend who was with us said the same thing about turtle meat being delicious.

We put our boat away for the season today. Now we start our migration away from the summer heat of S Florida towards the mountains of Colorado and Utah and some boating on Lake Powell.

Glad to see your OK Mike - when I saw the title of the thread I thought the worst.......

Jim,

Thanks for posting and sharing. We all appreciate what you did to try to save that poor creature.

Good Luck on your trip.

You did all you can do. Sorry to hear about the results.

We have to look out for whales, sea lions and such. A few years ago I had a humpback whale surfaced right in front of my boat as I was doing about 40mph! It was all I could do to throttle down and avoid the collision. We were very lucky.

Now, is turtle soap good? I have had seal meat, an acquired taste...............:)
