Waxing the bottom?

I was talking to a service guy about using a hoist once a year to hang the boat to get the bottom cleaned REAL good and apply a good coat of wax. he told me that waxing the bottom is a waste of time cause the minute you take the boat out the water and pressure of scooting across the lake removes the wax. I thought 'hmmm'...not sure if I agree with him. thoughts?

btw - the bottom of my boat is strictly gel coat...not painted.

Just got finished doing mine. Got the sore shoulder to prove it. :) I do it at least once a year. Now with that said I slip my 240SD in fresh water most of the time and it does not have the bottom painted so it needs a good waxing and cleaning.

i wax mine a couple of times a season. we are in fresh water and the boat is dry stored when not in use

I too have heard that waxing the bottom is a waste of time.......but I do it at least once a year as it gives me a good idea as to what's going on down there.

On my prior boats that had a trailer, I used to wax the bottom. I think though as long as it is smooth and free of debris, it may be a waste of energy. The last couple of years I did not wax and could not see any difference either way. (I used to wax the prop too)

Many folks with brains much bigger than mine can demonstrate how a waxed bottom can actually decrease the performance characteristics of your hull. That being said, I can’t imagine that a nice protective coating of wax could be a bad thing. (Especially for those of us who are not hydrodynamics gurus.)

Plus it just feels good to rub your hand across a nice smooth clean bottom.

Well known that wax on the bottom slows the boat. Might not be much at 30 MPH but when one spend a lot to get from 70 to 80, one doesn't lose those hard earned increases by waxing.

Best regards,
Frank

I never used to wax the bottom of my 240SD except for the bow portion. I would take the time to clean it thoroughly and might even use some compound to get out some spots. But the bottom always stayed shiney witout waxing.

Great topic...and one I was wondering about.

I am pleased to say I am only going to listen to people telling me that you dont have to wax the bottom...well...so...I dont have to wax the bottom.
