Not a sea ray question, but here goes.

I inherited an older Waverunner from a relative
that has some damage to the engine cover. I have not done much glass work before so help is appreciated.

I need to reattach a piece of fiberglass and then fill and paint.

These pics show the damage. I'm thinking of grinding the seam so they fit together better and using epoxy to connect and then building up some glass on the inner corner for strength and then filling the outer and sanding and spraying. Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

Should not be a difficult repair. Get West Systems booklet on fiberglass repair for starters then use their products. Keep in mind that your goal is to put Humpty Dumpty back together AND, rebuild the strength the original component had. Usually, it takes a large bevel to rebuild enough thickness to regain the strength. That means you are going to have a repair many times wider than the original.....like 6"-8" wide.....where you lay several layers of new glass into seam which you have ground out. When you have all t he pieces, as it appears you do, you might try cheating a little bit by epoxying the 2 pieces together if you can get them to fit well enough to return the hood to its original shape. Then grind away the underside to almost the gelcoat surface and do the build up from the bottom. Use thickened epoxy as a final filler because it is considerable stronger than Bondo or marine putty. Finally, I would paint it rather then trying to match gelcoat for an older unit like that.

Good luck and have fun learning from the process..........if you try to repair that one. Honestly, by the time you buy all the West System resin, hardner and fillers, you are going to have more in the repair than a used hood will probably cost.

From experience messing around with these older skis, I'd try to find another one that isn't broken and paint it to match. You will be money ahead.

I found this guy selling parts off a few of them http://www.ebay.com/itm/PART-OUT-Ya..._Watercraft_Parts&hash=item4ace67fc3c&vxp=mtr

Worth an email to him to see how much a hood would be.

Also this one that you could paint: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1994-Yamaha..._Watercraft_Parts&hash=item4618087139&vxp=mtr

I've tried to find the hood on eBay without much luck. 1991 Yamaha VXR. Looks like I'll be learnin' me some glass.
