I have a 2008 185 with a clarion head unit the speakers i am not sure of. Would anyone know what the factory put in and what the watts of those would be ?

This can change not only from model year to model year, but also mid-model year. The best way to know for sure would be to look at your radio manual or, even better, look on the backside of a speaker.

Watt ratings don't mean anything. Just put in an efficient speaker because a HU cannot put out big power or clean power

Dennis i have tried to pull the covers off but i am nervous about craking the covers. Is there a certain way of doing this? The manual did not say anything about the speakers. I guess i want to know if i add a 100 x 4 alpine amp will i blow these speakers. I am on a little budject so i would rather put the money into the amp now play a while and then replace with better speakers.

I'm not a radio expert, so I'll let others chime in on that. But, it's not like you're adding a big, super powerful amp. My guess is you'll be just fine - but wait till you here from someone else with more knowledge on this.

The covers pop off - gently pry the cover away from the boat - using a plastic putty knife (or similar) can help. Sometimes, pushing in on the center of the cover at the same time can help.

Power doesn't blow speakers, distortion blows speakers... Heat forms with distortion and cooks a voice coil.

You will be fine. In fact it will sound cleaner.

Arrggghh! Don't pry, for the love of god, you'll break them! (Panasonic, anyway)

To remove the grille, rotate the grille clockwise. There are four tabs that are holding the cover on. If you pry it off, you will break the tabs, guaranteed.

I guess I've gotten pretty lucky over the years!

Anna - go with what Scott says - I'm betting he's done this more than me.

Thank you everyone for the help I just got the cover off by listening to what sfergson 727 said. Again thank you so much also the speakers are 160 watt Pansonic speakers. What's funny is searay mix and matched things. O well i can start my upgrade now knowing what my system is made up of. Everyone have a great evening now its time to start shopping.

Probably on the speakers that SR used in the past, you could pry the cover off. But, I'm pretty sure that SR has been using Panasonic speakers at least since 2007, maybe as far back as 2003, for most of their boats that don't have the premium systems. Pansonic covers are a pain to get off, but they will break if you pry....I have the broken speaker to prove it. (The tab that breaks is on the speaker, not the cover, unfortunately)

I've actually done that on newer covers, as well. But, it sounds like this is a better way - I'm all for that. Thanks, Scott - I'll try that next time.
