Hello All-

I have a 195 Sport with a 5.0 TKS. I am trying to gain access to the water shutters / flappers, however I cannot get the elbow seperated from the rubber tubes. I can get everyhing really loose, however there is not enough clearance to completely pull them apart.

I suppose I could remove the exhaust elbow mounted to the motor, however does this need to be done in order to get the rest of the tubes and elbows off?

yes you will probably have to remove the elbow.....replace the gaskets with new Merc gaskets....do not reuse the old gaskets.

After removing the elbows as suggested, I was easily able to get the rest of the parts removed. The reason I am doing this is because my boat overheated and I figured that the flappers melted in the process.

Not surprisingly, all that was left of the flappers was the metal bar that the flappers hinge off of. Seeing that the flappers "ears" are missing, I am a bit concerned as to where they might have gone, as well as what other problems they could cause.

That said, my next question is could the flappers have gotten lodged somewhere and if so, where should I check? The last thing I would want to do is reassemble everything and have the old flappers cause more problems.

Check at the transom end of the y-pipe...where your exhaust exits the boat. Here is the new style flappers...very easy install....they just push in from the top of the y-pipe....
