6.2L Mercruisers, V drive
Headed out for a leisurely cruise with the family this morning. Cruising along at 3400 rpm and get a "check engine" alarm port side so I back off to idle, lift the hatch couldn't see hear or smell anything. Motor then stalls at idle. Try to start it but alarm sounds and engine stalls. Back at the marina about 2 hours later I take a good look around the engine a notice a lot rubber on the floor below the belts. I also start the motor, it fires up fine, but the alarm sounds shortly thereafter, I hear a squeal then it stalls. Last few outings I have noticed a squeak port side on start but it fades once the donk warmed up. Water pump I ask. I'm hoping so!!

The squeal is probably from the belt tension or impeller sticking either from being worn out or a bad bearing in the sea water pump. Since you have rubber in the bilge it sounds more like it's the pump. I'd loosen the belt before you start it next time reach down and try to rotate the sea water pump pulley it should take some pressure to rotate it but it should not feel like it's jammed and pop loose. I'd also check and clean all the pulleys to get any rubber out of them or it will squeal after you put a new belt on, your old belt now has flat spots on it and will always squeal also look for any kind of a water or oil leak that could be getting on the belt.

Its was the water pump. Not only were the std impeller done in November 13, a new port side pump was suppose to have been installed which I paid for.

I nearly fell off my chair when the mechanic I am using now said "It the water pump, its seized and expect it needs replacing, but you can't complain, it looks like the original pump".

I responded saying the pump was installed brand new November 13, emailing him the completed work order later that day.

He now needs a closer look at it least to say the definitely pump has seized, but sticking to his guns that its not a new pump.

You should put inconspicuous marks on parts being changed along with dated pictures of the marks. Then make sure they were replaced after paying for it. Watch the sheepish looks when you show them the marks still there.

My mechanic has advised that the 6.2L Mercruiser has 2 pumps - a pulley driven sea water pump front of motor and a raw water pump located elewhere. He has advised that it may have been the later that was changed out. I have passed this enquiry on the broker for a response. Does this sound correct? I am a ludite when it comes to motors and have only a basic knowledge. Good advice Jitts3 but you are assuming I know where the parts are!!

You do have two water pumps on the engine.
All marine engines do (I think).
Maybe the other one is what you paid for...?

Belt fried and squealing during start: replace sea water pump assembly and belt it is about 400 in parts. How do I know? Both of my engines had the same event. Problem solved. The bearings will go bad if any water or degreaser makes it past the seals.

There are 2 pumps apprently - the raw water pump and the circulating pump on the mercruiser 6.2. In my case it has turned out to be impellor in the pump that was allegedly replaced that has failed not the complete pump. I do find it confudling however when you are told that the pump needs replacing, you advise the pump was apparently replaced just recently, then to be told it on closer inspection it doesn't need replacing just the impellor. I do get suspicious but need to keep faith in mankind or I need to become more technically savvy on the boats mechanics otherwise I'm at the mercey of putting my faith in mankind!!
