I thought I'd publish this in a general area as so many folks seem to have this issue (different size boats) from what I read in the forums.

My Sea Ray is a 2000 260, with grey water processing (Grey water goes to holding tank). I was seeing a wet floor in front of my step (very slight) and didn't understand what was going on. And upon reading several threads here (thanks) I found that there is a sump pump below the step and that there's a trash can above it (also something I didn't know until I read it here) In any case, the root of my issues seems to have been 2 fold.

1) Totally clogged tank vent filter.

2) Gummed up sump box/float/filter.

I figured out the tank filter because I heard a pump sound after running the sink water for a long time, that would not shut off when when I turned all power off, and at the time did not know about the sump. So I went around poking at things and the only thing that would stop this pump sound is opening the waste pump out cap and then I'd hear a whoosh of air (pressurized). In any case, after this pressure was let off the pump sound would shut off a few seconds later.

So my take is that the pump was pumping but could not pump into a pressurized holding tank (with no vent) and since water can exit the sump through the wire access points which are above the point it would normally be pumped out at. Result, you get water in this area.

When I took off the filter and checked it, I could not push air through it at all (100% plugged). I then sawed it apart and found the tank end of the filter had the foam encrusted with some kind of mold/mildew yuck that was totally solid (like a puck). The filter contents were also wet. Temporarilly, I removed the innards, cleaned the foam and put it back in.

On the gummed up box, this was obvious once I opened it up. There was a pile of gunk covering the float and the inlet tube (perfurated tube). I assume made it turn on slower than it otherwise would because it's heavier I cleaned everything up, ran my sinks and low and behold, no more water coming out, and the pump ran and turned off when it should.

I will update this thread if anything new happens, but I suspect I've solved my mystery.

 Excellent! And, thanks for the update!

One question... would you like to know what the "black, hockey puck" stuff actually was?:wow:

Dennis, I think I'll pass on that intimite knowledge.... it was solid like a rock. But I was able to soak it out... While I thought it crazy to recharge the cartridge myself..these things are incredibly simple. Just a bunch of activated charcoal inside a tube with flimsey pieces of foam on the end. And since I could not find a replacement locally, I'll just go down to petco and pick up some filter pellets and put them in It'll have to be taped together (waterproof duct tape, but since it holds no pressure, it should not be a big deal until I get a new one.

Rather than tape it, go to the plumbing section they make robber couplings with clamps. Works much better. Bob

Yeah, I don't think I'd want to trust duct tape - as good as it is - for this job. You're right, Terri, it's not under pressure. But, just for the sake of making sure the smell stays inside, you know?

Somewhere on this site - I think within the last 2 or 3 months - was an excellent write-up on doing the re-charging yourself. I think PVC couplings where used.

Guys, thanks for suggestions. This is only temporary. I will buy a new one. The duct tape will hold until I get it. This is one of the filters that attaches directly to the top of the tank, with a built in strap to hold it. I think if I did the mods I read about on this site, it would no longer fit in it's holder. and since it'll be full of activated carbon/charcoal, i will not stink even if it does leak some air (i cut in the middle). I will get a new one over the winter for the beginning of next season. I have about 4 weeks left in this one (and that's stretching it).

I have to say, when I read the really good ideas for the mods, I expected I'd see it from the penny pincher section, but many of the folks writing about it were in what I'd call the yacht size boat section. ... given that anything you do with one of those boats is in the 1000's, not to mention the cost of initial ownership, it's surprising these guys would be making, and installing, new holding tank filters.... just surprised me.

I hope someone finds the information useful and saves them some head scratching and dealer maintenance. The tank vent and filter is important...check that it's clear yearly.

Best Regards,
Terri

That same activated carbon is in alot of automotive evaporative capture canisters. I had a car once that flooded the can with gas and polluted the carbon. A new can was almost $100. I prised the top off and refilled with fish tank carbon for about $4.00. Worked fine for years. The moral of the story is, money is money and if you don't need to spend alot of it to fix a problem, thats a good thing.

I hope I'm wrong....but I think you may have to repost soon.

Groucho, I sure hope you're wrong. I watched it backup and leak and then after fixing it, watched it work correctly. But you probably have some experience I do not.

I guess time will tell. We have a month to boat before it's just too cold to have fun. Although, we've never had a camper top before so maybe we'll extend our season a bit. I'd like to get some fall foliage pics on the lake before we put her up.

Scorpio, of course you're right and we do almost 100% of our own work. But that's us... I guess I expected folks with 35-45 foot boats would not be crawling around in the bilges. It just surprised me.
