Water Heater Recommendation

If your cooling system is a closed system and you keep quality antifreeze in it there is no reason that the engine hookup would shorten the life of the water heater.

I really like having the hot water when I tie up to a buoy or anchor out at the end of a long day's cruise.

I agree. Why cap off the already available hookup, plus if your core ever goes, you still have warm water at elast.

Yep, mine is a closed system. In this case, why mess with something that works.

With this type of system is it better to "pre-heat" the water with shore or genny power, then the engine keeps the temp good through out your trip?

Mine is raw water cooled, but still not a big deal if I have to replace the heater down the line. My biggest problem will be the physical removal and re-install. The heater itself isn't outrageously expensive to replace.

I don't know but I preheat the water heater on shorepower before starting the engine on the theory that it will bring the engine up to temprature faster.

On my boat the closed system water temprature is about 145 degrees. This is as hot as most water heaters, more than others. The water temprature it produces is much hotter than I can hold my hand under.

Scalding is usually considered 130-140degrees F. Most HWH are governed so as to not get any hotter than that. I know the one on my boat is. Also, many newer shower valves have controls to eliminate the possibility of scalding. 140 is plenty hot.

One of the places we go is less than two miles from the boat launch. I pre-heat at home so we'll have hot water since the two miles trip isn't enough to heat the water.

Thank you everyone! I guess sometime old technology is worth saving. It sure would have been nice to have an instant HWH though. Oh well, I need to get busy and re-route some water lines.

Thanks again.

OK???? I am a little confused. Is yours like the one I have mentioned in thread:

Please give me a little more insight.

Yes, I have the 30 amp eMaxx - just routed the water line in and one out, no problems. It provides, like a residential "instant hot" unit, pretty much hot water all the time. Takes up a lot less space of course, and the bottom can't fall out, corode or leak like my old unit did.

MikeS, is this eMaxx unit ignition protected so that it can be mounted in the engine room?

The one I bought was specifically for marine use, but it looks like I am sending it back. I talked to the folks at EEMax. The 29amp will only raise the water temp 29f @.5gpm.

I am setting this boat up for Alaska, so the water temp in the holding tank will be around 55-60f. At .5gpm, it will only raise the water temp to 89f or so, if you stay at the .5gpm. They told me in the southern parts, this temp rise would be OK because the water temp in the tank is 75-80f.

I have never taken a shower at .5gpm and the admiral likes her hot showers.

I haven't heard back from MikeS yet as i asked him if he had the 29/30 amp model.

Mine is actually mounted under my steps into the salon, where the old unit was, I will pull back the opening today and look at which specific model - I know it was the higher end one, we did have to add a 30A breaker for it. I left the paperwork on the boat, I did not get it from West, rather a marine / rv heating shop locally. It has one input and one output - we have been able to shower with it and I haven't checked the water temp but it's plenty hot. I'll get details.

Thanks Mike. I think you may have the 29amp model.
