VHF MMSI

cool - I'll look for it. For some reason I can't send you one?

I'm curious to try the process of clearing an MMSI from a SH and I have several candidates around the marina to make use of it.
I dont have anyone blocked. Dont know why cant send. But hey, just post here.
not too good with all this new tech. got my first smart phone a year ago. Daughter bought for me because i refused to give up my 12yo flip phone. Still cant figure how to get the Maps to talk to me and give directions. But i have a compass on my mirror, good enough.

Follow-up to this:

I bought the radio from Pirate Lady. I'm trying to get as many boats in my area configured with DSC as possible. I know I'll be able to find a home for it, but I've also been recommending SH as a brand and I wanted some experience with their MMSI reset system to make sure I'm not making promises that can't be delivered.

After receiving the unit, I called SH tech support. (it's weird - they answer the phone) I told them that I had a GX1400 and the MMSI reset request code from it. The rep said they could help. He asked for my email address so they could send me the procedure, which is:

Thank you for contacting us about the MMSI in your radio. There is a process by which we can get information from you and provide you with a passcode that will allow you to put in your new number.

What we will need is your full name, radio serial number, MMSI number currently in the radio, newly issued MMSI number, and the radio will allow you to get to a screen where you can provide us with a Request Code. You will find this in the Setup menu – Configuration – Reset – User MMSI – Request Code.

All must be correct in order to generate a reset code. Please confirm serial number, current MMSI, and request code are accurate.

Name:
Model:
Serial no:
Current MMSI:
New MMSI(if available):
Request code(required):

After we receive all that information we can request the passcode you will then enter into your radio.

I sent them the info on Saturday. On Monday morning I received a confirmation email, and yesterday they sent me the code. I punched it in last night and the MMSI is cleared.

Very cool - I'm going to continue to recommend Standard Horizon VHF's.

I just had the same experience with SH. My new to me boat already had a MMSI number and I wanted to keep my handheld and reprogram it with new boat MMSI. Due to age and firmware version of handheld, I had to download a firmware upgrade first. SH Tech support gave me great instructions and links and made the process very simple. As you say, once you get the request code and send it to them, along that other info, they send you the "code" to reset the MMSI.

I also had to "relinquish" the MMSI number on my old boat so that the new owner could claim it. This was done on BoatUS. Very simple. Likewise, the previous owner of my new boat did the same for me. All set for the 2022 season!

I know they are linked to your boat, and I know that once you program a radio, most of the time it needs to sent in to have the MMSI removed or reprogrammed.

I’m not sure as to the validity of a second radio having a previously programmed MMSI. I wouldn’t think that would be limited as you could have multiple radios onboard a vessel.

Yup, we have redundant VHFs, as well as an AIS transceiver (with its own antenna) all using the same MMSI.

Are you guys registered with a US MMSI or international MMSI through the FCC. It looks like If I ever want to take a trip to the Bahamas, I should get a mmsi from the fcc? I don’t know if I will ever do that trip, but I would like to.

FCC for us because we go to Canada a couple times a year

I wish I could find someone around here that HAD a radio with an MMSI #! I've had one programmed in my radio for three or four years and have yet to try it!

I use it with my dinghy. They kids take it and my hand held VHF that has an MMSI. I use it to see where they are via position reports, and to call them.

That's a great idea!! I could send my wife off in the dinghy and when she's about 4 miles away and I can't see her, I'll call her on the hand held! I'll have to get a hand held with MMSI now!

So she 4 miles away, you can’t see her, and you’re gonna call her. What am I missing here? *kidding*.

There is no place to duck in and hide around here. It's wide open and you can see that far. She'd HAVE to be a long ways away so I could see her on the GPS too right? I've never used this MMSI stuff! That's what I'm trying to figure out! If we have the same MMSI number on a HT would her location show up on my GPS? Assuming programmed correctly?

No. You both would need AIS for that and that is not the same as DSC. DSC is just for selective calling and emergency transmission of your GPS coordinates to the CG if you press the red button (if you have a GPS VHF or connected your VHF to your chartplotter so it receives the GPS coordinates from the plotter).

In addition to the emergency location info passed in a DSC distress call -- assuming the VHF radio is connected to a GPS source -- you can also use DSC to request another radio's position. The other radio operator can respond back... or not...

(Not sure how that works when it's the same MMSI trying to poll and answer...)

But all that is VHF to VHF.

There are some cases where some of that location info can show up on a plotter, mostly when the VHF and the plotter are made by the same company and the maker enabled appropriate comms between the two.

Generally, and as @Creekwood said, seeing "another boat" on the plotter is what AIS is all about.

Position Requests WILL accomplish that though, even when the units share an MMSI. If the HH is set to automatically respond to PR’s and the requesting unit is set for polling, you can even follow the “trail” of the remote unit on the plotter.

The plotter and VHF can be different brands, but they must be connected via NMEA-2000 or bi-directional NMEA-0183. I’ve come across several older/lower-end plotters without NMEA-0183 input. In that case DSC distress calls can be sent with position data, but the plotter will be unable to indicate the position of a vessel responding to Position Request, nor the position of vessel in distress.

A slight difference in how I have my radio configured.

Standard settings for the handheld are that a position request from another vessel must be manually acknowledged. I have it set for automatic. When I make a position request from the main boat to the handheld, it auto answers and sends the GPS location. That is then displayed on my Garmin GPS. If I want another update I have to execute another position request.

It’s not real time tracking data like AIS broadcasts to all boaters, but is useful enough for my purposes. It also doesn’t rely on the kids having to answer the call.

Oh, and I have a separate MMSI for the main and handheld vhf. That way I don’t have to change the MMSI on the handheld if I sell the main boat (which I’ve done 2x).

I need to update my old Raymarine stuff! I need to check my Icom VHF and SH handheld for that setting.

LOL!! See? This is NOT confusing at all!! I knew the difference between DSC and AIS. BUT, I don't have a HH with a GPS and polling response (to return the location to my MAIN radio and then on to my Garmin GPS). I'm assuming I CAN do that, but I need the HH to figure it out! That would be a neat feature and being able to follow another boat when they respond to the PR's would be nice. My main radio is a Standard Horizon Explorer 1600 with DSC. I think I just need a fancy HH to tie to the same MMSI #. I have had the boat for 14 years, but with the stupid new Washington State tax rates, older powerboats pay more than newer boats for their registration I assume. It's just been announced and makes no sense at all. I don't know what kind of an impact that will be, but I'm hearing a 13 to 18 percent increase in my tax. Sailboats get hit progressively more each year they own them. Powerboats get a break until year 9 and then the tax starts going up quickly. It makes NO sense.
