I've ordered a new Shakespeare SS ratchet mount for a VHF antenna. I see 8 footers from $34 up. The boat is used on a land locked lake 99% of the time. Occasional trips to the gulf will happen too. What would be a good antenna for my uses?

I would stay with the 8' whip, it will give you the best chance for good reception even if the caller isn't too far away. Plus if you go out to more open water then you definitely want the larger antenna. Good Luck
