In my current boat I have Vessel View which was installed at the factory. I receive data from the Cummins 5.9 for all of the engine parameters. The Cummins is full electronic shift etc. I also have a Garmin 5012 chart plotter. I want to take the external GPS signal from the chart plotter and connect it to Vessel View so I can get MPG on Vessel View and the Chart plotter etc. I can see the MPG screen on Vessel View with no data. Can I just add another cable to my NEMA 2000 backbone and then attach it to the Vessel View? If so what cable do I need? Where do I get the cable? Do I need to do any resetting of parameters? Thank you.

As I recall, you should just make the NMEA0183 connection from VV harness to the Plotter. As far as I know NMEA2K is not supported on the VV but the Cummins compatible variant of VV many be different that than the Merc. Do you have the VV manual and installation guides? If not I can try to find them tonight and scan in the relevant page(s).

I do not have any of the manuals, that would be too easy. I believe there are several variants of Vessel View over the years. I have the 2012 model of Vessel View. I have called Cummins and Mercruiser so far. I just have not found the right person to talk to yet. Thanks for trying to help Jason.

if you check your VV harness - there should be a blue and a white cable [as far as I remember] . They are the NMEA 0183 inputs to the VV. If they are not there - check the harness product id - usually attached with a label somewhere - then look up the harness. Some versions does not include NMEA 0183 on the harness direct as far as I remember. But I'm just removing my old harness so I'll take a picture later on :) as I have upgraded to VV7.

On the Garmin - you take the NMEA 0183 output - and connect to the VV - and then you go to Garmins Communications menu and setup output as NMEA 0183. I think Garmin has a post on VV messages you can send. So you need to "limit" the types of messages to fit VV.
