Looking toward the future gathering facts in the present. Diesel, 40+ feet, leaning toward a sundancer (like the aft berth) looking at 420/440 and 400's. the only reason I am considering an 400 express is straight drives. Questions: 1 I've heard straight drives perform better because the weight is more forward. They dont fall off plane as easily in heavy seas. 2) I was a mechanic before I joined the service I still do my own work and it "seems that straght drives may be easier to maintain. stuffing box leaks / access. any info in these areas or in an area i have not given consideration to would be appreciated. Thank You

In the ±40 ft. Sea Ray world, there is virtually no performance difference between Sundancers and the EC. It is all about the boat's center of gravity and there is enough fiberglass on this sized boat that the performance differences are very minor.

Maintenance difficulty is a product of overall engine room design more than where the shaft tube and packing gland/shaft seal are. For example look at a 400EC......you cannot stand up and must do everything on your knees and there is barely room to pass between the engines. Now look at a 450DA with the same engines......2 adults can pass between the engines and you can stand up in the engine room.

This is not a decision you should contemplate making based on internet research or boat specs..........you need to go make a broker earn his $ and look at some boats. Things will get real clear, real quick.

Thank you Frank for your input. Solid advice. I intend on starting this weekend. I am on the fence about buying another boat this winter it will have to be a real good deal. That said there seem to be alot out there this fall.
