Vacation Days

At least you're talking about giving vacation, I can't even find a job and my last employer laid me off (fired me) after 18.5 years with the company and all he could afford to give me (so he says as he drives in his new car) was 2 weeks pay and a handshake. Can you beat that??? :smt021

Send me your resume. My company is pretty diverse geographically and we do a lot of work for federal and state gvernments. E-mail is in my profile.

Skolbe, you need a company policy. No matter how small you are, IE just you and wife and one other employee that policy will protect you. Nothing says you can't amend it as you grow and make decisions. I took the HR manual from the last freight line I worked for and used it as a out line for our company. It's saved aggravation a few times.

You need to out line:
Vacation
Holidays
Sick Time
Personal time

Another good practice is to have a sign off sheet. List all items discussed and have the employee sign it. Give them a copy and you keep a copy in file. That way later you can clearly point to his signature that you told him 10 days.

Best of luck with your situation.

It’s interesting that many of the members here own their own businesses. Perhaps, one of the reasons that we enjoy boating is that this provides a way of forgetting about the daily grind for a while. Assuming we don’t tote along the cell phones and crackberrys.

My employees know that a week is 40 hours and the two weeks vacation is a total of 80 hours. One caveat I insisted on as a policy was that they could not take two consecutive weeks, this became too problematic to accommodate in my field, which is construction.

Policies become easy to establish once we understand that a small business is not a democracy.

Speaking to the vacation pay advance. I don't believe that is a good idea and most company polices prohibit that practice. For some reason employee's seem to think vacation pay is extra, but the few times I have seen the advance allowed, the employee always comes back broke and then starves and whines for two weeks or what ever time period it is before the next pay check.

Best of luck Skolbe. You got your hands full. :smt024
