V drive vs I/O costs

i think that I/O boats can and do pivot similar to inboards, at least inboards that have prop tunnels....I am basing this on a comparison between my boat and a dock friends 34' Cruisers Yacht.....I have twin V-drive inboards and he has twin Volvo dual prop outdrives....the two boats pivot very similar to each other....

however, the smoothness of shifting the V-drives compared to the clunking of the outdrives when shifting in and out of gear is enough to make me appreciate docking with the V-drives....

Your friends duo prop and the B3 both have a clutch. Neither should be clunking.

Even so, a B3 doesn't shift as smoothly as my 21 year old Hurths. (but I'm used to the KAH-LUNK of A1's!)

well, sometimes it's a tick, tick, tick, tick, tick KAH-CHHHHUNK. It all depends on how my cables are adjusted.

B3 should shift smooth as silk, no delay. With a brand new clutch cone, you will feel a thump. 1/4 worn to almost worn to the point of slipping you won't feel or hear anything.

The salt water higher maintenance, "I would never own one" statements , posted by some of the freshwater boaters, is pure myth. They do just fine in salt water, I've actually seen more B3 corrosion on fresh water drives.

Didn't just about all the saltwater comments come from saltwater boaters?

B3 corrosion in freshwater was a very real thing, but it was the fault of Mercury Marine, not the water.

Mine didn't make a peep when I went in and out of gear.
