V-drive prop spins while in neutral

So I spoke with a mechanic and a transmission shop. They both believe the clutch packs are hosed and need to be replaced. **yay .. They both recommended just to finish out the season the way it is and have it serviced in the off season, which is what I will do since I'll probably be pulling the boat in another month or so anyway.

The Transmission shop said I could drop off my old transmission and purchase a rebuilt transmission for about $1800. with a 6 month warrantee. Is there anything else I should do while I'm there? I know Damper plates can go bad and with ~700 hours on the motor I figure thats good to replace since I'm already there. Anything else I should be looking for?

I still have to do some research on removing the transmission at this point as I don't want to have the engine pulled.

A rebuilt transmission for $1800 sounds way too cheap to me unless someone just freshened it up by installing a seal and clutch kit. That means all the other internals are used and in whatever condition they happened to be in when the core came in. What about the pump, gears, bearings, thrust washers and what if the old transmission had a bearing failure and pumped metal shavings all thru the hydraulic system? The cheap rebuild would have been inspected and washed out, but it is virtually impossible to remove shavings trapped in the recesses of the gear case and hydraulic system.

A 6 month warranty sounds ok, but what do you really get? The vendor will probably take the transmission back and rebuild it again, but the major part of the cost in what you are facing is going to be the haul out, the yard time, the labor and launch for removing and replacing the transmission..........and even if the rebuilt transmission is warrantied by whomever you buy it from, you are still facing a do-over on the haul out, labor and yard costs.

I'd have to take a good hard look at the cost of a new transmission from ZF before I rebuilt route.

I called who my marina (prince william marina) uses for their transmission work. Hale Marine. http://www.halemarine.com/

I figured I'd call them again after I get the exact info off my transmission to make sure of their price and what is done to a rebuilt transmission.
