Has anyone purchased a custom mattress for their v-berth that they would highly recommend? I have a bad back and need a good one, I don't care how much it costs. I tried a Tufted Topper which is an improvement, but I need something even better. Thanks.

We had the same issue with our mattress. I contacted Knox Foam out of Knoxville Tn and they made us a custom memory foam mattress that is great. Three inches of base then 2" of 5 lb and 1" of 4lb for a total of a 6 inch thick mattress. I worked with Jody. Made a template of the top and bottom of the mattress, sent it by UPS to them and they had me a new one in about 10- 14 days. That was in March of 2008, here is their number 865-329-3051

Man, what great timing for this thread! I spent my first night on our "new to us" 320DA on Friday night and had a crick in my neck the next morning. That "mattress" isn't going to get the job done and I intended to ask the group for ideas. Well, here they are.

Question to Mood Swings: When you made that template, how did you do it? I was thinking that maybe I'd use several sheets of poster board taped together and then cut to match the outline of the V berth

Thanks!

Mark

flarepoman,

I too have back issues so I went to the web site. Which mattress did you purchase (there are way too many choices)? How would you describe your matress, soft, firm, hard? How thick is it? Did you use the ACM measurement kit? Did you get custom sheets? If so, do you like them?

Since the mattress is two pieces I got some 3' wide construction paper and taped them to gether to get a 5ft 10" width. I laid the old mattress on top of the paper and traced it out to get the bottom size. Then took another two pieces and taped them together. I turned the mattresss over to get the top size. Mine are bevelled so that is why I needed the top and bottom. You can get tubes for mailing the template at UPS stores. Good Luck. I just tried to call Knox Foam to order some pillows and they are out of business.

Here is what we did we took our cushions off the boat went to a store that sells custom drapes and cloth. They had the high density foam in stock that also had the correct cutting tolls to cut the foam to fit. Thay cut the foam and made removeable covers with zippers. It was the best thing we ever did. you can take the covers off and take them home and wash them.

Best bet is to go to a matress store and see if you like it. It took a few nights to get to like it. Now I love it. Mine is 9" thick. The company can have sheets made for you. They also will give you the name of that company to have spares made. It was not cheap but whats your back worth??

I got lucky and found one that another 300DA owner was selling. Wife and I agree that this was the single best aftermarket investment I made for the boat. I have back problems and quickly found that the stock SR foam is.......crap! I tried the foam mattress toppers but there is no comparing it to a real innerspring mattress. The company is Handcraft mattress company. They can custom design it to fit your needs. On the 300DA it needed a hinge so you can open the storage locker and access the bottom storage area. Expensive, but you said that is not a problem. Highly recommend them. http://www.hmcwest.com/Home/index.html#Scene_1

Wow Bridog, that looks pretty comfy and convenient to get to the storage. Had no idea...

I will say that we purchased a 4" memory foam mattress pad from Walmart (last resort) and cut it to size. Has made a world of difference...no more sore back and "cricks" in the neck :smt038

Yes Boomerang. We have that for the aft bunk when guest's stay the night. It helps alot. We wanted something better for the forward V-berth.

I'm looking to do the same. Just removed bolsters. Tough to determine if I should go with a king or queen and the thickness. Thickness seems like it could offer the most sleeping area due to the angles in the sides. Was hoping artisan mattress had a template on file but they said no. They are located 100 miles from me. Gonna see if I can get someone to come down and make a template for me and advise best sizing

I have replaced all of the mattresses on my 560 Sedan Bridge. We had issues with our vendor (Verlo) as well but they fixed all of the issues immediately. We converted the bunks in the port stateroom to an "almost queen" that is a fully custom size and shape so it was a project. I have pictures of all three on my profile page if you want to take a peak. We are happy with the result.

Making the template is not that hard to do. hell if I could do it...................

I ordered memory foam mattresses off of Amazon - very reasonable - $295 for the fwd berth.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00II5MRBE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00

We reconfigured the aft cabin on our 360ac from two twins to a California King - the mattress came vacuum packed so it was easy to get inside - then we opened it up and it expanded on the bed. Very comfortable!

The forward v-berth I made a template out of a roll of rosin paper (buy it at Home Depot)

1. I laid it on the v-berth with no mattress, I taped and cut so that it fit the shape of the v-berth exactly. I made a protractor of sorts for the angle of the hull at the forward of the mattress to allow the greatest surface area on the top of the mattress.
2. I rolled up my template and took it home
3. In the garage I laid out the memory foam mattress I bought from Amazon on a piece of plywood on top of sawhorses and allowed it to expand.
4. I used a sharpie and marked the outline of the template ON THE BOTTOM of the mattress.
5. I used my wifes electric knife (Thanksgiving is next week... I may be in trouble :smt021 ) and cut the mattress at a 90 degree angle until I got to the forward area where the bow starts to angle outward and using my "protractor" template I cut the forward wedges at the compound angle to allow the mattress to fit right in.

The cut was not perfect - it makes a bit of a wave on the side of the mattress with the electric knife but once we put a mattress pad on it it fits great and sleeps fabulous!
