Does anyone know of a good documentation company? I live in new hampshire, but would imagine that it does not need to be a local thing to process.

Thanks,

Now is a good time to document. Get's you an expiration date that occurs when the boat is laid up in your neck of the woods. The penalty for an running with an expired document is severe with a big hassle factor to boot.

I used Atlantic Boat Documentation in Annapolis MD, but that was a number of years ago. Their number is 410 216 9500. I don't know what they would charge, but you can ask.

You can do it yourself and save some $$$. Visit http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/nvdc/ for the information. Last boat (first one I had documented) cost me $300 + 8 yrs ago -This one I did myself and it was about $125 with all of the other forms I needed to send because the boat was purchased from a bank (repo). A little time consuming with follow up (they needed a copy of the PO bank note - since it was already documented) but after 2 months everything was GTG. All the forms are up on their web site and you can do most by fax or email. Good luck - Jeff

+1:thumbsup:...and now you can expedite it over the phone and send docs via Fax. USCG makes it very simple...I know...unusual for a government agency. Kudos to the guy in charge for "subverting the system for it's own good":smt038

I was told by my dealer that I do not need documentation; however, one bank I got a quote from said I did since my boat was 36'. I was told by the bank that the documentation was required on the intracoastal waterways and would cost $375. Since I am about 1,000 miles away, I questioned why it was needed and went with another bank for the loan. So is documentation needed or not?

Look here for a start then imitate Jethro with the ciphering

Pseudomind,
Thanks for the link which definitively, after some deciphering, says I don't need to be documented unless I decide to take up commercial mullet bow fishing on the Illinois River.

320Bob,

Federal documentation places the vessel in a national registry by HIN number. It also becomes the functional equivalent of a title (part of the process involves a title search). The reason why banks would want to see your boat documented is that they are protected from things like someone selling the boat without paying off the note and claiming it sank.

I just bought a 310 Sea Ray in the State of CN. Short Sale. I also live in NH. Documented it myself. The only thing they needed was a copy of my NH registration, which I received with just a CN Bill of Sale. Very easy to do yourself for free.

suppose the boat its paid in full ? its necessary documentation here in Florida?

State of CN

I am NOT nitpicking but I had to go look at a map to see where/what is the state of CN! I couldn't find it so I figure it's either "Canada" or Connecticuit.

Whoops.

It's voluntary. I would consider it if you are planing to do any cruising to the islands.

Doing it removes the requirement of posting your FL #s

Second (or third) the comment that you can do yourself... and now is the time to do it as CG probably has no backlog..
I think my total cost was under $40, took about 8 weeks b/c I did on spring and I had a complicated case and did in the spring....
I purchased a repo that has previously documented but was never properly marked ( with big letters in the bilge or similar area) and the previous owner had let registration expire about 5 years previous (she was a dock queen)....

Follow the simple instructions on the National Vessel Doc Center...... and save a few hundred for gas...

My understanding of the bank requirements are that it's up to the bank. My friend with 35'10" LOA Maxum was not required to document by his bank. No bank involved with my purchase but I do like the clean look w/o the numbers pasted on the sides.

Thanks for your answer,,,,

My boat was documented by the previous Owner, now, as a US Resident ( not a US Citizen) i cant document my boat. I have to obtain a title.

Thats mean that i have to put the FL##### sticker?

And with out a boat documented, i cant go outside US??
