One thing that bears mentioning is that a documented boat is a named boat, and that name must be displayed on the transom. If you intend to document the vessel, decide up front what you want its name to be. You'll need it when you fill out the USCG forms.
If you already like the boat's current name, then its all good. If you do rename it, in addition to the USCG, you need to make sure you appease the Sea Gods with the requisite pomp and circumstance.
