I just finished a project adding several USB outlets around the boat. I had a few requirements
I was searching around and found that my outlets and switches are VIMAR IDEA. The system is very modular, and they make USB (part number: VM16368). Many of the switches are 3 gang trim plates, with a blank, giving room to add in a USB connector.
The Vimar connectors are non powered, and need to be wired. I picked up a bunch of 5 volt DC / DC converter that runs on 12 volts. I used 2 types
After a lot of reading and testing, I found what it takes to charge both the iPhone and Samsung android devices in 2 amp mode. I ended up with a 10k & 33k ohm resistor configuration on the data terminals. This is the same on the 2 amp fast chargers.
Here is the finished product (sorry for the rotation, uploaded from a tablet)
Schematic
Resistors
Wiring kits
- Clean look, keep to factory appearance
- Fast charging (2 amp)
- Run on 12v battery power

- 3 amp output, for a single connector
- 5 amp when supplying 2
