A friend of mine just called. He's out fishing said he hit a 2x 4 or something and now he's out there running 5mph and says he can't get it out of gear.

Any suggestions of what may have happened or what he can do?
He's got a 7.4L Bravo II FWC

Tell him not to turn the engine off until he gets to shore as he won't be able to start it again...

can we have Gary's cell phone number for emergencies?

I wonder if Frank W. would be upset if I put his cell number here...

I don't think Frank knows anything about sterndrives. Better post Skip's. He had sterndrives at one time.

Best regards,
Frank C

Yeah
Just PM it to me.
Seriously though. I think he sheared a cable retainer on the shifting dog or something there snapped.

Thanks for the quick replies. You never know if some here ran into something similar and had a magic fix or a "look at this" answer

Would be a good idea to swap cell numbers with fellow CSR's since we are very well knowledgeable with our engines and such.

I don't have a diesel, and I'm in the club.... They do make me buy the booze though...

As far as the drive. The in gear lockout is in the lever at the helm, so as long as you can mechanically return it to neutral (even though the drive is still in gear), it will start. Don't ask me how I know this.

I have seen Bravo cone clutches jam into gear so hard that tearing the drive down and trying to beat them apart will not separate them
gear and cone clutch replacement is often required to fix it

the other thing that happens is the pin breaks off the "shift link" in the upper
it is a cheap cast piece
the newer replacement is better

if he can't pull the lever back it is more likely the cone is jammed in the gear

also the engine coupler can rub on the lower shift cable and make the casing fail
usually when that happens you end up with reverse only
