Upholstery????

'95 Sea Ray 230 DA.
My sternside backrests have rotted out. These are the very back cushions that curve around both sides of the stern, above the swim platform with a chained passageway on the port side. Anyone know where/how to get replacements? I took them to a local upholstery shop and when they saw the curve, said they couldn't do it! Now, I've never done upholstery before, but it doesn't look that complicated to me! I think they only want to do the "straight" easy jobs. They said to contact the manufacturer. OK. I didn't have a very good experience with a "recommended" canvas cover replacement (Great Lake Boat Tops), so I'm a little leary of Sea Ray recommendations. Anyone here have any contacts?
Thnx!

I had Canvas, Etc. do my upholstery on my 450DA. They did a good job for the money. Mine was the first "curved" they had done. 772-233-0208 and ask for Russell and tell them what you have in mind. They may need some pictures. Hope this helps. JC

This is word of mouth issue. Talk to the people at your marina with older boats in good condition. Almost all will have experience with a local vendor. There is nothing very complicated about curves. You just have to find a local vendor with a reputation for quality and reasonable prices. If you were in west Michigan there are a number of people who do this type of work that I could recommend.

I've gone ahead and done it myself. Other than finding rustproof stapes (finally did!) and a chunk of pressure treated plywood, it wasn't too bad. Made the curve by attaching "slats" to a galvanized band around that curve. This is how it was done in the first place. The hardest part was stretching the vinyl enough to get staples into the plywood. I guess the real test will be how it holds up!
By the way, here in western MD, there is only one upholstery shop. Guess I could have waited to get to FL and try it there.

Why are there no junk boatyards???
