I am wanting to upgrade my XMD1 unit, is the CMD 6 and/or CMD7 unit compatible as far as wiring harness and remote??

The remotes are not compatible. You will need to get a MW1 (with LCD display) or the MW2 (without LCD) as well as run the cable model MWRXCRET (not included with remote) from remote to new radio.
i just installed the CMV1 (same harness as CMD6/7to replace my stolen CMD4 that was factory. The wiring harness was the same, so I saved some time not having to replace that! I don't think that the XMD1's harness is compatible with the CMD's.
P.S. The AiNet Sirius module was not compatible either......:smt021. had to "upgrade" to a SCC1 module.

and I can tell you that the wiring harness for the XMD1 and CMD4 are the same so I guess base on eddiemorales post above they are the same harness all the way up to CMD7.

Lucky, the only direct connect upgrade is the XMD3. This unit is a simple direct in/out, unit. All remote connections, etc are identical. The XMD3 you can do Sirrius, and it has AUX RCA inputs so you can plug in IPOD. It is not in production, but I have been able to locate two(one for me, one for friend) on this forum. It's a simple 5 minute change out. Good luck
